Syohachi Yakiniku 尚八日式燒肉店 @ Wallich Street

It's been ages since we last ate yakiniku. Was it in Taiwan the other time? So when Tracy and Hence suggested, both Ivan and myself, readily agreed. Plus, Syohachi Yakiniku is very near our hotel.

the shop

We chose the 'Early Bird' ala-carte buffet which included beef, at $50++ per pax. This set came with one-time serving of sashimi, which works well for us because we crave for sashimi too!

one-time serving of sashimi

The sashimi platter comprised of salmon, tuna and scallops. I liked the scallop best!

Then, by default, the staff will bring out one serving of mixed meat for the table while we peruse the menu. For drinks, we took the default green-tea (option of hot or cold) as it is refillable.

default platter

The default platter seemed like a sampler plate where one gets different cuts of beef, chicken, pork belly, prawns, squid and oysters. Try first before ordering from the menu, I suppose.

Can't go wrong with prime cuts and shortplates, so beef was quite a 'safe' choice. I liked the chicken but it was a tad too salty. Pork belly was tough though, so we decided not to order it for the buffet. The oysters that came in the aluminum foil cup, was super tiny. Decided to skip this one as well.

cheers

let's get cooking

prime ribs

beef shortplate

The leaner cuts of the beef was rather chewy, so I preferred the prime cuts where the marbling was good resulting in tender meat.

The lamb chop was of a good sized before cooking and texture was tender good. However, it was also strongly marinated. Need to wash it down with the green tea.

The seafood section was also worth ordering, especially the scallops. Large and plump. Lovely!

must order scallops

yummy seafood

The staff here are friendly and pretty efficient in topping up our green tea. The orders were served rather quickly too although the shop was bustling. Kudos to the lovely staff!

more beef!

grill it quick

prime cut

I got to enjoy the yakiniku because Hence was busy grilling for us. Thank you buddy!

Not forgetting the salads and side dishes, these were good complements to the meat.

refreshing side dishes

I did spy on other tables and mostly were in groups of 4 or more. But there was also a table with just one pax. So, as long as you enjoy the food, solo dining is fine as well!

Thank you Tracy, Hence and Ivan for sharing the calories! I think we ate 1kg for one pax during our 90 minutes of dining...

The Public Izakaya 大衆酒場 @ Tras Street

Was there for supper with Ivan, Hence and Tracy when we were doing our staycation nearby. The place was bustling during dinner time so we made our reservation prior and went to shop in 100AM mall first.

Ivan's favourite is the oden so we ordered a portion to share. Omakase style so that night Chef gave us hardboiled egg, daikon, beancurd, and fishcakes (2 types). The soup was tasty!

Omakase Oden Set (6 pieces) @$19

Cabbage Miso @$7

Lemon Chu-Hi @$12

Plain Udon Soup @$7

The cabbage miso is refreshing and crunchy and to quench thirst, I had the Lemon Chu-Hi. To accompany the drinks, we had the deep fried river shrimps. A tad bigger in size and makes a good beer snack.

Kawa Ebi Age @$11

We reminisced about the super huge tori karaage, and for old times sake, we ordered a portion. One portion is 4 deep fried balls the size of a child's fist.

Tori Karaage @$13

huge!

The skewers were pretty good too. At least, it was not of a stingy size but I wonder when did it get this pricey.

kushiyaki (skewers) - negima (1) , hatsu (1), gizzard (x2)

Onigiri Mentaiko @$8

All in all, the menu has adequate options and I'd like to order other things next time. For example, I'd like to try their motsu-ni and also their kushiyaki again.

Birds Of A Feather 2022 @ Amoy Street

Finally, we are able to gather for a meal at one of my favourite places; Birds Of A Feather. Let's eat up a storm! And, we did.

Cocktail

Godfather of Sichuan @$30

Irish Tea @$25

Someone Like You @$23

Didn't try the cocktails though because all of those were ordered by my friends. I imagined if one places an order for the cocktail, will probably need to phrase their orders properly. For example, imagine if someone tells you, "I'd like to order Someone Like You..." Will you raise an eyebrow at that? Haha!

HH Brewerkz Golden Ale Full Pint @$12

Bang Bang

Bang Bang @$14

Cold Dressed Chicken, Mustard Green, Peanut

mix well and enjoy

Bang Bang is a new item and my first time trying it. Chef Eugene explained that the edible 'coaster' is made of peanuts and one is supposed to smash it before having it with the salad underneath. I like the 'coaster'. Tasted of peanut butter!

Find the Chicken in the Chillies

Find the Chicken in the Chillies @$19

This one need no introduction and my must-have every time I eat at BOAF.

Yu Xiang Eggplant (V)

Yu Xiang Eggplant (V) @$17

The eggplant dish is looking very different now. It has baby mozzarella, spring onions crumbs (that tasted like cookies) ontop and hiding the Japanese eggplant. Mix it all up and enjoy.

flavourful eggplants

Burratine & Tomato (V)

Burratine & Tomato (V) $26

Chef Eugene was explaining about the special tomato used in the Burratine dish and we were sold. Hence, we gave it a try. It was a good choice.

juicy sweet tomatoes

And, to have the burratine on a crisp toast with a slice of that tomato, it was heavenly. What a joy to eat. Thank you for the recommendation, Eugene!

Strange Flavour Prawn

Strange Flavour Prawn @$42

Ok, I must admit. Am not well versed enough in the vastness of Chinese cuisine, so when I saw a dish named as "Strange Flavour..." my mind was having a shutdown. Like, why would I want to eat strange flavours? So, its name is a literal translation of guaiwei 怪味 which is a seasoning mixture in Sichuan cuisine. Orhhhhh.

The prawns were lovely and nothing strange about the flavours. It was somewhat sweet with a touch of spice. Prawns were of a good size, fresh and firm.

Loup de Mer

Loup de Mer @$89

When you're reading the menu for Loup de Mer, it says "Whole European Seabass, Denise Pesto, Sweet Vinegar Joyn Tomato, Celtuce" . Then, if you're like me, you'd do a double take at 'Denise Pesto'. Aptly named as such because, the pesto sauce was concocted by Chef Denise. She's lovely.

Homestyle Braised Pork Belly

Homestyle Braised Pork Belly @$58

with winter truffles

This dish is surely a head turner when it was brought to the table. We could smell the aroma when the lid was taken off. And, we were in luck as the winter truffle was still available then.

Staff would assist to mix the ingredients. The braised pork looked like dongpo meat but not that sweet, and it was fork tender. You'll get burnt rice from the sides and bottom of the pot too. Yummy!

Pear & Jelly

Pear & Jelly @$18

Glutinous Rice Cake Rock @$17

I think I fell for the Glutinous Rice Cake Rock dessert. I could never imagined it as such, but loved the crisp outer of the cake and the soft, light texture of its inside. Looked and tasted like smokey mochi but doesn't feels 'heavy'.

I love how Chef Eugene innovates for the same dish. For example Yu Xiang Eggplant, be it the elements in the dish or the presentation, there's always something new even if the dish name is the same.

Once again, we were happy to be able to dine in a group, in a comfortable environment, and with lots of good food.

Thank you foodie friends for taking time for this catch-up. Special thanks to Eugene for feeding us, as always, and looking forward to your new creations. Till next time.

Celebration Take Home Mother's Day Set (4 to 5 pax) @$238

For friends whom prefers to celebrate Mother's Day in the comfort of their own home but is currently fretting on what order, this article is just for you! Goldleaf Restaurant offers a takeaway set that has dishes that mom would approve and of a good value too.

Let's take a look at the dishes in this set, shall we?

Cold Dish Trio 冷盤三拼

Braised Duck Thigh 家鄉鹵鴨腿

The braised duck thigh was aromatic, well braised and fork tender. That braised sauce is gold!

Steamed Seabass in Superior Soy Sauce 清蒸金目鱸

Kam Heong Flower Clams 甘香花啦啦

Kam Heong sauce is typically made of dried shrimps, curry powder, shallots and garlic. The kam heong flower clams here is of strong flavours and goes well with beer!

Braised Mushrooms with Seasonal Vegetables 三菇扒時蔬

After eating at Goldleaf a few times, I must say that even their vegetables dish is done well. Crunchy greens, tender mushrooms with lovely sauce.

Golden Porridge 黃金海鮮粥

Golden Porridge 黃金海鮮粥

The golden porridge is cooked with sweet pumpkin (hence, its colour) with plenty of seafood such as whole prawns, scallops and mussels. Oh boy, those mussels were huge!

huge mussels

The above set although meant for 5 pax, I would say it can even feed 6 pax comfortably.

Thank you Kris for the invite and Goldleaf Restaurant for hosting the tasting.

이태원짜장 Itaewon Jjajang @ 64 Peck Seah St

We were nearby for our staycation and decided to drop by Itaewon Jjajang for lunch. Unplanned, and without reservation. Walked to it and saw a good number of pax queuing up. Hmm, to persevere or to give up? Decided to stay in-queue and after 10 minutes, we were rewarded as the staff allowed us to wait inside the restaurant.

unanimous decision

Decided on the menu while waiting and soon, we were informed that our table was ready. To our surprise, the staff let us into a private room. Wow!

Yes, we ordered Set A and upsized the jjajangmyeon plus added a fried egg to top it up. Additionally, we got the seafood pancake.

Set A - tangsuyuk + jjajangmyeon + jjampong (not in photo)

jjampong  짬뽕

Interestingly, one could choose the spice level for the jjampong at Itaewon Jjajang. Tracy selected Level 3 out of 4 levels and the staff was amused. She asked us if we really wanted to do Level 3 as it will be spicy. Keke!

Indeed, the jjampong turned out to be spicier than what we normally would order but still bearable (if one doesn't drink up the soup!) The spicy kick was sharp and noticeable once you drink the soup, stays only for a short while in the mouth (thankfully!) and then it travels down slowly to the belly while freeing up the tastebuds again.

Next up, I've long heard about the jjajangmyeon here so was excited to try it. The sauce was thick and gooey, and flavourful. Enjoyable.

Jjajangmyeon 자장면

To tell the truth, I was more interested in the tangsuyuk rather than the noodles on that day. The version here was pretty good with the batter remained crisp and the sauce not overly sweet.

tangsuyuk 탕수육

Unexpectedly, we were wowed by the seafood pancake. For me, it tasted eggy with crisp edges. Plus, not too oily. Eating this makes me want to have beer, or makgeolli!

seafood pancake 해물파전

yummy

I liked the pickles here, and we ordered seconds for the pickled cabbage. So good!

my favourite pickles

The staff here are pretty friendly and efficient. Thank you!

Enjoyed lunch with my staycay buddies; Ivan, Hence and Tracy.
