[Jeju] Octopus Noodles 오빠네 왕만두 문어라면 @ Dongmun Traditional Market 제주동문시장

Although we know we were headed to Dongmun Traditional Market, I didn't do any research prior on what food to eat there. Tracy said there's an octopus ramyeon shop, so we went round trying to look for it without realising that we had passed by it before...

At last, we looked up at the banner of one of the shop that we had passed by earlier, and voila! 'Octopus Noodle' !

our breakfast stop

The shop front seemed to be selling steamed mandus and steamed cakes. We enquired from the lone person in the shop if we could get breakfast there and he said yes.

The place was a small and functional. We were the only customers at that time. The interior felt like it was frozen somewhat in the passage of time.

The information that Tracy got, was from this post. I wanted the mandus so we enquired from the uncle on how many pieces were there in one serving. He said 5. So I asked if we could do a mix and he said ok.

mandu (5 pieces) ₩5000 - 3 pork and spring onions, 2 kimchi

The steamed dumplings were lovely. Both were pretty flavourful. Complimentary water is available. Self-service and get your own cup from the water dispenser in the shop.

Though we were only having instant noodles, the shop still serves complimentary kimchi and pickled radish as side dish.

The broth for the octopus noodles was rather spicy. The octopus were cut up into small pieces and I quite liked the texture. Chewy but not tough.

pork ramyeon @₩11000

We ordered the pork noodles, and the broth, noodles for this was different from the octopus ramyeon. There were generous pieces of pork in the noodles. However, the meat was lean and a tad tough. It also had a stronger porky smell.

Both bowls had similar toppings of bean sprouts and onion slices.

The uncle was friendly and since we were the only customers, he talked to us a little bit to find out where we were from, and how did we find the shop.

[Jeju] Snacking all round Seogwipo Maeil Olle Market 서귀포 매일올레시장 @ Seogwipo

We made it a point to visit local markets and Olle Market was one of them while we were at Jeju. Not that far from our second hotel and according to Hence and Ivan, they were there in 2018 but couldn't enjoy the place as that time, most stalls were closed due to Chuseok. This time round, we made sure we visited before the holidays.

let's go!

The parking at the market is similar to Singapore's style where one pays the parking fee when exiting. If there's a machine, then could use that. Otherwise, can pay to an actual person manning the exit booth, hence remember to keep some loose change handy for this purpose.

cutie

stalls

The entire market is like a long straight stretch with branches to its left and right. Some areas are more busy than the other, so it is a good idea to walk and look look see see what's available.

dried fish, anyone?

But of course, we were there to look for lunch food.

We stopped at a sundae 순대 stall and ordered some to try. The lady and the young adult manning the stall worked quietly to prepare our order.

They were both very nice and friendly. We got our bag of food and eager to try!

Oh my goodness, the blood sausage (sundae) was so good! Soft, bouncy and not funky at all. The innards were very good too and easy to eat. So yummy with the salt, or on its own. If you're there, I will strongly recommend this stall.

Next, we stopped at a grilled meat stall. They were putting on quite a display so we stopped to watch. And of course, ordered something from there as well.

One of the staff was acknowledging the various tourists who were taking video/photo of them and was quite obliging to the camera! I called it, them doing their 'fireshow'. And yes, they will request for people who are standing too near when they are 'performing' to take a step or two away from them.

Kudos to the staff who worked hard to attract people to their stall. The food was decent, so can say hi to them if you happen to be there.

Ivan and Tracy wanted ttokbokki, gimbap and eomuk combo so we went to a sit-in stall in one of those alleys in the market.

eomuk (fish cake), ttokbokki, corndog

It was a simple no frills setup, so order from the front counter, pay and get your food and bring it to your table. There's seats inside the stall as well as outside. When you're done, bring back the used utensils/plates/tray back to the staff at the front counter.

Then, we went to an airconditioned shop that sells coffee and dessert. I got myself a tangerine juice. The juice was freshly squeezed and so refreshingly sweet. The shop offers about 4 to 5 variety of the hallabong with some leaning more towards the sharper lime-like citrusy flavours. On both of my visits to this 'cafe' (yes, I liked the tangerine juice there!), they didn't have the specific ones (Red Hyang or the Hwangeumhyang) that I wanted as they were not in season, so I had the Cheonhyehyang 천혜향 instead. Fragrant and still sweet!

The market is nice to walk around and we found at least 2 shops that we really liked!

Marché Mövenpick @ Suntec City

It's been ages, Marché. Visited the one at Suntec City Tower 3 on a weekend, for a lunch gathering with university friends. The place is kids friendly, with a small play area where children can climb up and down the treehouse, except that it was not really a treehouse. The queue was quite daunting at about 1230pm.

If you have small children, then it will quite worth it to get the kids meal. For just $10.90, there's a main course and one glass of juice. There's also a free paper mask that the kid can colour. Nice.

The place is not very big but it does offer quite a good selection. For example, plenty of greens for healthy eaters, pizza made upon order, paella, the all-time-favourite rosti counter, savoury and sweet crepes, grilled meats and seafood, soups, oysters, cakes, drinks etc.

Being market style concept, just bring the Marché card issued upon entrance to the food stall that you are interested in. Make your order and pass them to card to swipe. Collect food, cutleries and enjoy.

Finally decided on roast beef for lunch. The beef is sliced upon order. The staff was pretty generous with the meat, but the table was aghast when the plate was brought back. "It's raw!" Everyone protested. Hmm, actually quite true. Hence, to be safe, decided to bring it back to the grill station.

The beef was then grilled for about or minute or two on each sides. Was a tad worried that it might become too tough. Fortunately, the meat was still good! Meat was still tender and the slightly charred area was really flavourful. Liked the portion of the meat. Carnivorous cravings, satisfied. The meat was served with salad leaves, a dollop of mash potato and brown sauce. Liked mine with mustard.

As the children were busy at the play area, the adults chit-chatted. Was considering desserts and coffee. The coffee counter do have a limited selection of cakes, pastries and bread. The staff recommended to get a set for just $4.90. The set has coffee/tea and a cake. For more pricey cakes, a top-up is required. For this coffee counter, one need to pay in cash instead. I think that's fine as one cup of coffee is already $3.50.

Actually, the cake tasted quite good. Dark and rich, yums. Good value.

PasarBella @ The Grandstand (Turf City)

Located at The Grandstand (former Turf City) Bukit Timah. Took the free shuttle from Clementi MRT bus stop. To be more precise, it's the bus stop (B17179) opposite of Clementi Mall. Shuttle bus schedule here.

to the market
Visited on a Sunday, and took the 245pm bus. Not so much of a crowd at that time. Go in via the nearest entrance at the drop-off point, and the first trader one sees, is the Oceans of Seafood.

looks like those turban shells that one can sizzle away on a grill top?

Was there to ogle at slim, lengthly legs. Crab legs, to be more precise. If you must know, one section of the leg will set you back about $44.

sweet legs, anyone?

Over at the International section, one can take their pick of oysters, prawns, brown crabs and lobsters.

The fresh seafood looked so enticing. Wonder how sweet will they taste?

Stumbled into the Cheese Ark, and sampled cheeses made from cow, sheep and buffalo. Am no cheese connoisseur, and with very thin slices, am not so sure what exactly am I tasting. Haha, ended up with a rather safe option (gouda) but thought it was pretty flavourful when eaten in sizeable cubes and paired with 2011 Barons de Rothschild (Lafitte).

Wandered somemore, and if you're looking for organic options, there are some traders in organic produce.

Quite liked the ambiance of PasarBella.

There are many non-food traders too. Such as Pantry Magic. Everything looks so appealing in there. Of course, am easily jolted back to reality just by looking at the price tags.

Elsewhere, one can stop to smell the flowers too.

The upwards riding escalator inside PasarBella was intriguing. We went up but couldn't get down, till we go up one more level.

to infinity?

Interesting stuffs all around in the market area for us to explore.

pinky cute

Ok, back to food. Passed by Le Patio, and its gigantic pan.

Went on to Bistro Botintin, where the tiniest suckling pig was ready for customers.

Wasn't hungry but was determined to at least try something, so got the Iberico pork loin (@$8 per 100grams).

The fatty bits was really nice, especially with caramelization. Meat was slightly pinkish and tender. Enjoyable.
