O.BBa Jjajang & BBQ @ Chun Tin Road

Finally, tried O.BBa KBBQ at their Chun Tin Road outlet (Bukit Timah). It's within 5 minutes walking distance from Beauty World MRT, so that's pretty convenient. Reservation is not available at this outlet, hence diners would have to appear at their doorstep, then key in your phone number at the queue kiosk (at the entrance) and wait for staff to call. One could also check queue status via whatsapp.

My bro and me went at about 1pm and were seated within 10 minutes. The shop was fairly busy even at late lunch hour.

Scan the QR code left by the staff at the table and order through that as well. The place has adequate staff, so no issue in getting your questions answered. Drinks were served immediately once order is placed and the BBQ set appeared within 5 minutes as well.

Set C - mix of beef and pork @$96++

Beef short rib, pork belly, traditionally marinated beef, marinated pork rib, sausage

At first, I was slightly confused as to whether the staff will do the BBQ or are we supposed to do it ourselves as the staff was just standing at our table after bringing out the meats. Ahh, perhaps he was waiting for me to finish taking the photos? Hahaha!

let's start

apple salad

fishcake

sliced sausages in tomato sauce

kimchi

While staff was busy grilling the meats, we busied ourselves with the side dishes. I liked the cold apple salad and the kimchi the most.

beef short ribs

We loved the tender slices of short ribs. It's unmarinated hence, one could add dip it into the sesame oil salt mix, or make it into a wrap with whichever condiments that you like. Noticed that the shop don't provide raw garlic here.

grilled cheese

Realised that the set also came with 2 squares of cheese which is also grilled. Interesting, and staff shared with us that this type of mozzarella cheese isn't too melty and hence, suitable for the grill. My first time trying a grilled cheese that isn't haloumi.

I was confused x2, when the staff suddenly dangled the already grilled cheese infront of me. So I quickly brought up my small plate to receive but he frowned. I was like thinking... what, what do you want me to do? Then he said "photo". Orhhhhh, he wanted me to take a photo of the grilled cheese.

For drinks, we tried the Chungha Sparkling which is like soju in sparkling form. A ladies drink, and it was sweet.

gyeran jjim (with the set)

Staff kindly advised us to eat the steamed egg otherwise, the hotstone pot will continue to cook it due to its retained heat and the parts that are in contact with the pot surface, will likely get burnt.

This oppa staff at our table, do like to nag us a bit. Hahaha!

tasty

pork ribs

grill all

traditionally marinated beef

I least liked the traditional marinated beef as it was mostly lean and became such small bits after cooking. The marinade was sweet and similar to teriyaki or bulgogi sauce.

Give me all the fattier cuts, anytime!

The set also came with selected stew or noodles. We chose jjajangmyeon because wanted to try their shop specialty.

mix well and slurp

The noodles portion could be main dish for 2 pax. We were so full after all the food. I think this set feeds 3 comfortably.

juicy pork ribs

grilled white kimchi, onions, sausage, beef tendons (cut out from the beef shortribs earlier)

The free sausage was pretty good. I think it is pork sausage and texture was bouncier than the banchan version.

Once you're done with the food, head on to the cashier to make payment. Our meal costs $133 in total for 2 pax.

On your way out, remember to take your complimentary small haagen daaz ice-cream to eat outside as staff said they are sorry, but the ice cream can't be eaten inside the shop. I guess this way is to free up the dining table for the next seating.

Overall, staff are friendly and efficient. Thank you to the oppa who helped us BBQ that afternoon.

[Jeju] Is it lunch time? @ Seogwipo Chinatown 서귀포 차이나타운

I was satisfied with our first cuppa in the morning at Youdong Coffee. Nevertheless, the rest of the party were in the mood for something savoury next. Time check, 10+am, so we're still at the brunch hour! Went to a restaurant nearby the previous night's dinner place (CheonJitGol) and discovered that the name of the shop is called Seogwipo Chinatown.

The restaurant was empty when we reached since it was not quite lunch time yet. While we were there, only one other table was occupied later on.

Staff was not in the mood for conversations, so we kept our interaction minimal. She took our orders of cold noodles, jjangmyeon and a side of tangsuyuk.

kimchi

tangsuyuk 탕수육 @₩18000

I think the version of tangsuyuk here was quite good. It is the non-glutinous flour batter kind of version so one gets a nice clean taste of the batter and meat without the extra chewiness. Meat was lean but not dried out. So nice as a savoury snack. The sauce was not too overpowering and not too sweet.

yummy deep fried pork

The noodles as expected, came in hearty portions.

jjampong 자장면 @₩6000

The meal at this place was rather inexpensive and I think 2 pax could share a bowl of noodles with a side of tangsuyuk.

Too bad they don't have menbosha (멘보샤) in their menu. And no, this wasn't our lunch place. It was just a pre-sightseeing snack.

이태원짜장 Itaewon Jjajang @ 64 Peck Seah St

We were nearby for our staycation and decided to drop by Itaewon Jjajang for lunch. Unplanned, and without reservation. Walked to it and saw a good number of pax queuing up. Hmm, to persevere or to give up? Decided to stay in-queue and after 10 minutes, we were rewarded as the staff allowed us to wait inside the restaurant.

unanimous decision

Decided on the menu while waiting and soon, we were informed that our table was ready. To our surprise, the staff let us into a private room. Wow!

Yes, we ordered Set A and upsized the jjajangmyeon plus added a fried egg to top it up. Additionally, we got the seafood pancake.

Set A - tangsuyuk + jjajangmyeon + jjampong (not in photo)

jjampong  짬뽕

Interestingly, one could choose the spice level for the jjampong at Itaewon Jjajang. Tracy selected Level 3 out of 4 levels and the staff was amused. She asked us if we really wanted to do Level 3 as it will be spicy. Keke!

Indeed, the jjampong turned out to be spicier than what we normally would order but still bearable (if one doesn't drink up the soup!) The spicy kick was sharp and noticeable once you drink the soup, stays only for a short while in the mouth (thankfully!) and then it travels down slowly to the belly while freeing up the tastebuds again.

Next up, I've long heard about the jjajangmyeon here so was excited to try it. The sauce was thick and gooey, and flavourful. Enjoyable.

To tell the truth, I was more interested in the tangsuyuk rather than the noodles on that day. The version here was pretty good with the batter remained crisp and the sauce not overly sweet.

Unexpectedly, we were wowed by the seafood pancake. For me, it tasted eggy with crisp edges. Plus, not too oily. Eating this makes me want to have beer, or makgeolli!

yummy

I liked the pickles here, and we ordered seconds for the pickled cabbage. So good!

The staff here are pretty friendly and efficient. Thank you!

Enjoyed lunch with my staycay buddies; Ivan, Hence and Tracy.

Taste Of Korea 찐 (JJIN) @ 109 Amoy Street

Wendy wanted to have Korean food, so we went to Taste of Korea for the first time. Reservation was made and received the confirmation the next day. Pretty efficient.

are we doing BBQ today?

Lunch Special for weekdays only

I wanted to try their jjajangmyeon, so we ordered the 'Chinese Value Set' @$42++ which comprises of two bowls of noodles; jjajangmyeon and jjampong plus a serving of tangsuyuk. Came with side dishes.

The staff was concerned as she highlighted that this set is only meant for 2 pax, while we are in a party of 3. Nevertheless, we assured her that we weren't that hungry and if need be, will order more.

spicy green chilies

Was thirsty, so ordered the yuzu tea. Otherwise, complimentary cold barley tea was provided as well.

The bowls of noodles were rather huge! Definitely can feed 3 pax comfortably.

jjajangmyeon 짜장면 @$15++

Tangsuyuk was served with the sauce on its side. The sauce was flavourful, and adequately sweetened. There was a nice fragrant from the sauce as well. Plenty of onions in the sauce.

tangsuyuk (small) @$28++

dipped in sauce

The tangsuyuk meat was rather lean, and best to eat it while it is hot!

jjampong 짬뽕 @$16++

The jjampong was not spicy and was rather sweet. Could do with more seafood but I do like the addition of black fungus in there. Soup was tasty!

Overall, the food portion was good and we were definitely stuffed.

Thank you Jingwen and Wendy for joining me for lunch.
