Daily Beer @ Telok Ayer

There were 3 things that stood out when I was perusing their online menu; fried chicken, craftbeer with localised names (hello Kampong Pilsner, Telok Hazy??) and of course, Ivan's favourite Fish Cake Soup.

It was an approximated 8 to 10 minutes walk from Telok Ayer MRT station (DT18) and one should head towards the temple/Telok Ayer Market/Hawker Center direction.

No reservation is available, so our party arrived at 630pm on a weekday evening and only outdoor seats were available.

complimentary munchies

Order via the app and the food will arrive shortly after. Fried chicken took the longest to arrive but it was worth the wait. Let's see what else we tried for our party of 5.

Nacho Chips @$14

We took a bite of the nachos chips and we just looked at each other. Hmm, it tasted like a healthier choice version. There were obvious seasonings (cheese powder, seaweed bits and raisins) on the chips but those fell off as soon as the chips were picked up.

Grilled Dried Pollack @$28

The plate of grilled dried pollack looked impressive, I must say. Taste-wise, it was a close cousin of the nachos chips. Natural tasting and pretty much unsalted as well. Dunked it into its accompanying mayo sweet soy sauce and it was more enjoyable. The same mayo dip worked well with the nachos too!

Beer Flight @$35

Ok, the beer flight was placed in such a way that I can't see what is what. One can't pick the sampler flavours, so that night we were served K-Ginseng Lager, Seoul Weizen, Telok Pale Ale, Telok IPA and K-Festbier.

As per its name, the K-Ginseng Lager tasted of ginseng but it was still light and hoppy. Perfect for our hot humid weather. Bitterness level of slightly less than 1 out of 5. Seoul Weizen was smooth and bready, with a hint of bitterness that's slightly stronger than the lager. The Telok Pale Ale and IPA both have pronounced fruity fragrance that's accompanied by prominent bitter after taste that's between level 2 and 3. Lastly, the Festbier was the most different from the lot with its rounded sweet caramel malty flavours. I had flashback of chicken essence from this drink. Hahaha!

If you have at least 3 drinkers in the group, I do think the beer flight is a good way to taste multiple flavours at one go since it was served in a 200ml glass. The flavour that I really wanted to try on next visit, is the Busan Hazelnut Porter.

Premium Fish Cake Soup @$28

We were glad that we ordered the fish cake soup. Lovely soup that warms the tummy. Classic tasting and there were chicken cutlet, eomuk (fishcake), and hard boiled egg in there. Enjoyable after a couple of beers.

Angry Bird (Original - whole chicken 8 pieces) @$30.90

Since it was our first visit, let's get their original version to try. Surprisingly, this already came with some heat (spicy). Nicely seasoned and freshly fried. Outside crunchy and inside was juicy even for breast meat. I had the wings and the ribs, and was satisfied with this order. Will visit again for fried chicken and craft beer.

Thank you to my food and travel buddies; Tracy, Hence, Ivan and Shermaine for the meet-up and the dinner treat!

Yardbird @ Shoppes Marina Bay Sands

It's wine night again, but we gonna do Southern food. Which means, bourbon! Actually, no lar. I just wanted to eat fried chicken.

Thanks to Hoong An, whom helped to make the reservations.

Digital menu via QR code scan is available on every table but I do prefer physical menu. Each of us ordered a dish each except for B, who arrived last.

Wednesday was ladies night, hence 1-for-1 Signature Cocktails for the ladies.

BLACKBERRY BOURBON LEMONADE @$22++

The cocktail was noticeably light and tasted pretty fruity. Liked that it as more sweet than sour. The berry tasted good.

For appetisers, we tried the Devilled Eggs. Each order has 3 portions, so we ordered 2 plates. I thought the bottom of the egg was a cracker but it was not. Ended up, dirtying my hand when I tried to pick it up using my fingers. Oops.

DEVILED EGGS @$14++

Next, I insisted to have salad, so we got ourselves mango salad. Fresh, crisp and light. Loved the crunchy walnuts.

BUTTER LETTUCE & GRILLED MANGO SALAD @$18++

And of course, we must have chicken. However, we were distracted by a new item on the menu or rather, an item that both Ivan and Hoong An have yet to try. This was my first time, so everything is new for me.

TRUFFLE & FOIE GRAS ROASTED WHOLE YOUNG HEN @$58++

We ordered the truffle and foie gras roasted whole young hen, and it does have a Christmas-sy vibe to the dish. The taste of the stuffings actually grows on you, the more you eat it.

butternut squash biscuit stuffing

Then, we decided to order the other signature; Chicken ‘N’ Watermelon 'N' Waffles.

Chicken ‘N’ Watermelon 'N' Waffles @$40++

Interestingly, served in an iron basket shaped like a chicken. The fried chicken was nice, waffle tasted good with the syrup but the tummy was protesting. Feeling rather stuffed by then. Could only do half a piece of chicken. I think I ate too much stuffings earlier!

Overall, nice gathering with like-minded friends. Cheers guys! Merry Christmas Hoong An, B, Elle and Ivan!

The Beast Southern Kitchen + Bourbon Bar @ 17 Jalan Klapa

Was at Pan Pacific Serviced Suites and decided to drop by for dinner. Reservation is recommended. It was a warm weather night, so we hid out in the comfort of air-conditioning.

We ordered fried chicken, cornbread, fish and chips, pork ribs and an extra serving of slaw. For drinks, happy hour was till 8pm, so got myself the Brass Lion Butterfly Blue Pea Gin.

Lemonade @$8

Diet Coke @$6

Bourbon Russell's Reserve Kentucky Straight @$15

Brass Lion Butterfly Pea Gin @$18

The gin was delicious and sweet. Ladies drink, if you'd like.

coleslaw @$6

cornbread @$8 x 2

Have I mentioned that I loved cornbread? I do, especially well-made ones. The version at The Beast was firm and somewhat drier but still so good. Served with house made whipped honey butter.

The purple slaw was nicely crunchy and not overly sweet. Refreshing and the necessary vegetable component in the meal plan.

Catfish & Chips @$22

The portion for the Catfish & Chips was good though I didn't quite like the batter as it was a tad thicker than expected. The fish itself needed lots of tartar sauce.

Bourbon Glazed Ribs @$32

The single most expensive plate that night was the Bourbon Glazed Ribs. Lovely texture of the meat that was fork-tender, flavourful and not too overpowering. Quite yummy.

served with sweet potato fries

I was in high anticipation for the fried chicken when it was served. My friend remarked that that size seemed to have somewhat decreased as compared to their previous visit.

Southern Fried Chicken @$20

I liked the fried chicken. Crisp flavourful skin, moist insides and you just gotta eat it while it is hot. Didn't need any sauce too. While it may not be the best fried chicken, it is comfort food.

Staff are genial and friendly with good knowledge on their food items, portion and also drinks.
