Nozomi @ Star Vista

After work dinner with Eric and Wendy, and Japanese cuisine it was! They had dined there before, so my turn to try, I guess? Hahaha! We were on the waitlist as it was Thursday and the place was busy. It took about 20 minutes before we got a table.

menu

I had the Salmon Trio and Ikura Don, while Eric had the Unagi Don and Wendy chose the Scallop Truffle pasta.

Salmon Trio Ikura Don @$24

The don came with their signature red sushi rice. The vinegared rice was rather mild and loved the overall oily mouthfeel of the fatty salmon especially the aburi'd ones. Came with wakame clear soup which was tasty.

Complimentary iced water is available upon request.

Unagi Kabayaki Don @$24

The rice bowls at Nozomi was kind of on the smaller side of things.

Scallops Truffle Linguine @$36

The overall taste was rather mild for the pasta. Loved the scallops. We were enjoying our talks and dinner until we finally noticed that we were the only diners left in the shop at 930pm. Thank you to the staff who waited patiently for us.

Thank you Eric and Wendy for the dinner treat!

H&C Halcyon and Crane Cafe @ Paragon Shopping Centre

This is one of the more popular places at Paragon on a weekend morning. For us, we chose to have brunch there on a PH morning and arrived early at 1130am. The brunch crowd was not there yet.

Did you know that H&C has a Granola menu? Dearborn granola is available here. An extract from Dearborn's website states that it is a "hand crafted, small batch breakfast food that is proudly made in Singapore. Ingredients are sourced with the same intent, with a keen focus on traceability and sustainability." Let's support local.

Granola Menu

We opted for the simplest version with milk for a taste test.

Dearborn Granola and milk @$9

Dearborn Granola

I suspect that am probably too accustomed to the taste of commercial granola and those generic cereal packs to understand the differences. Dearborn granola has natural tasting and knowing that the ingredients were sourced with sustainability in mind, probably made me feel better eating it.

Ivan chose the Dan Dan Spaghettini, and it was a repeat order for him. There's a choice of spicy or non, and we opted for non-spicy version.

Dan Dan Spaghettini (non-spicy) @$26

Give the noodles a good mix before tucking in. Noodles were good, tasty with the minced meat bits but leaning towards the sweeter side.

Crispy Squid in the menu was quickly noticed by both Tracy and myself. It turned out to be a good choice. Chunky, tender squid well battered and fried to a golden brown. This was so tasty! My favourite.

Crispy Squid @$18

Hence ordered an orange coffee and it was interesting. Orange juice was served separately and the coffee was in cube form.

Orange Yuzu Passionfruit Coffee Cubes Latte @$14

in goes the orange

ta-dah!

The last main dish was the Grilled Tiger Prawn  Risotto. The dish looked vibrant with its beautiful colours. However, I was confused by that piece of bread served together with the risotto.

Grilled Tiger Prawn Risotto @$32

This dish was rather refreshing with the diced zucchini, oriental corn, multigrains and pumpkin 'risotto'. Again, strong flavours and overall enjoyable!

For dessert, we were unanimous in choosing the Nutella & Banana French Toast. It came with a scoop of vanilla ice-cream.

Nutella & Banana French Toast @$23

On first bite, I was intrigued by that one singular taste that was familiar but can't really pin a name to it. We debated amongst us for a very short while before having the eureka moment of revelation. "The fritters taste from the goreng pisang!" Hahahaa!

Overall, the food at H&C have good variety and delicious. Will be back to try the other dishes. Spent about $34 per pax.

Sushiro @ Lot One Choa Chu Kang

This is the outlet nearest to my home. Go to the counter and get a ticket. Then, wait for your number to be called. Waited for less than 10 minutes before mine was called.

let's order

Seems like the Limited time special currently has plenty of yellowtail items, and I like yellowtail, so ordered some.

But first, a sip of whisky and soda. The alcoholic drinks at Sushiro are pricey.

Whisky & Soda @$9.90

The Marinated Winter Yellowtail in Yuzu Soy Sauce is flavourful but the slices were pretty thin. Winter Yellowtail with Monkfish Liver had thicker slices but there wasn't much flavour from the monkfish liver. Good oily mouthfeel.

Marinated Winter Yellowtail in Yuzu Soy Sauce @$3.90

Winter Yellowtail with Monkfish Liver @$4.90

Because it is nearing the weekend, decided to splurge a little. Ordered the fatty and less fatty tuna.

Less Fatty Tuna @$3.90

Fatty Tuna @$4.90

Blackthroat Seaperch @$2.90

Vinegared Fatty Mackerel (from Japan) @$2.90

But the best sushi, goes to Tuna Yukke. Flavours, on--point. Yums.

Tuna Yukke @$2.90

I thought I wasn't full yet, so ordered chicken karaage. Well fried and served piping hot.

Chicken Karaage @$5

Press the button on the menu to 'Check Out' when you're done and staff will come by to scan the number of plates. Take the payment card from the staff and go to the kiosk to pay.

Soi Thai Soi Nice @ Raffles City Shopping Centre

Was at Raffles City Shopping Centre basement, and as usual, dilemma of what to eat for dinner. As there wasn't any objection for Thai food, off we went into Soi Thai Soi Nice for a meal.

interior

We ordered the papaya salad, waterfall pork belly, green curry (chicken) and steamed fish.

Green Papaya Salad @$10.90++

Had the original version of the green papaya salad and it turned out to be non-spicy. Gave the feedback to service staff and they made adjustments to the spice level. Another surprising element in the salad, was the raw long beans. I don't think I ever had such a big piece of raw long beans before this!

Waterfall pork belly @$13.90++

The waterfall pork belly was drenched in tangy, sweet, and spicy sauce. This plate was spicier than the green papaya salad initially. The pork was tender but its skin was chewy. Very appetising when paired with a hot plate of jasmine rice.

green curry @$13.90++

chunky chicken

Interestingly, the green curry is found under the 'Soup' section and true enough, it has enough sauce for all four of us to enjoy. Liked the spice and richness in this bowl. Portion was good.

If the food order goes beyond $30 (excluding drinks), one can order a steamed fish for half price. So, we got one to try.

Thai Style Steamed Seabass (UP $32.90++)

The fish was nicely cooked and the sauce was similar to the one in waterfall pork belly. Spice level was manageable.

Overall, expect strong flavours which tend to lean towards the sweeter side. Spice level, manageable unless one requests for more fiery version.

tamarind drink @$3.90++

The portions are generous hence, for a group of 4 pax, just need one appetiser, one curry and one meat. We overate that night and felt super duper full.

Service staff are amiable and friendly.

[Media Invite] &JOY Dining Hall @ Basement 1 Jurong Point

At the Basement 1 of Jurong Point, head towards Shokutsu Ten Japanese Food Street and right after the bread shop, you'll notice an area that had been recently revamped. This would be the &JOY Dining Hall, the new multi-concept daily dining destination.

&JOY Dining Hall

One noticeable difference in &JOY Dining Hall are the availability of self-service kiosk for ordering and payment. Note that if you pay by cash, then you will need to bring the receipt to the Cash Payment counter first, and after which the food order will automatically be sent to the respective stall. There are also QR code sticker at the corner of every table, and you could order and pay (via credit card only) from your own device. This makes food ordering a breeze and no need to queue if you do it from your device. Otherwise, the self-service kiosk at the stall may have a queue also.

why queue?

There are queue number panels conveniently setup around the dining area, so that you could sit comfortably while waiting for the food to be prepared. Numbers watching. One thing that I noticed was that some diners didn't realize that the orange highlight meant that the food is ready.

While the initiatives made it easy to send the orders in without much queuing, now the bottleneck would be at the stalls, depending on its speed to fulfill the orders received. During the day of visit, it was dinner time and we waited for about half hour.

dining area

There are 6 brands concepts to choose from at this dining hall. Roman. Tei (ロマン亭) and Ramen KIOU (らーめん亀王) are two new Osaka brands making its mark here in Singapore for the very first time. There are also 3 new original concepts being introduced; Sushi-Go, Pittarino and My Gohan.

Chef's Recommendation

When one is ready to order, simply scan the QR code at the corner of the table. Browse through the menu and make your choice. Complete the payment and await for your queue number to appear on the queue number panel. Look for the stall name and your number should be there.

Scan to order

If you are unsure of how to navigate through the tech stuffs, there are a few RE&S "Angels" roaming around the dining hall on 19 and 20 Oct 2019 to provide explanation on the ordering system.

cheerful Joy, one of the Angels

Here is the list of promo items during this opening period. Don't say bo jio!

Opening Specials

Here's a glimpse on the ordering interface via the browser.

Went around looking at the respective stalls before deciding on our choice for sharing.

The wait for the food was rather long. Finally, it was ready and you could tell when the queue number is highlighted in orange.

Roman. Tei - Beef Steak Zen @$17.90

Roman. Tei is a beef specialist from Osaka and this is their first overseas outlet. Even in Singapore, we could enjoy the authentic experience of eating the beef steak rice from an exquisite Jyu (lacquer) box. The Beef Steak Zen set comes with a bottle of hot dashi, some condiments, pickled mustard leaves, chilled tomato, mini salad, garlic chips and wasabi and a bowl of clear beef miso soup. I like the idea of having the rice in hitsumabushi style, as well as to enjoy it as it is.

add these to the rice and pour the hot dashi in for a different style of eating
wasabi and garlic chips

There are actually two types of beef in the Beef Steak Zen set meal; the beef steak and thin slices of beef cooked in onions, soy and mirin. Like those you find in gyudon (牛丼). Two flavours in one set. That's neat!

And of course, we had to try Ramen KIOU and we got the recommended Tomato Cheese Ramen with additional toppings of tamago and chashu.

Ramen KIOU - Tomato Cheese Ramen @$17.40

Ramen KIOU offers robustly delicious ramen that is typically characterised by a milky pork bone broth, and roasted chashu that's super tender. Loved the chashu, especially round its charred edges. Almost melt in your mouth.

super like this chasiu

In case you are still not full from eating the ramen (how is that even possible!), there's a complimentary bowl of rice with garlic chips and seaweed shreds to fill you up even further.

carbs on carbs

Next up, the pizzas from Pittarino. Loved the striking yellow colour theme that they have. So cheery!

take out box (additional $1)
Pittarino - Half  & Half Pizza @$14 (opening promo price)

The Half & Half Pizza consisting of Teriyaki Chicken and Truffle Mushroom costs only $14 as part of the opening special until 15 Nov 2019. The dough at Pittarino is of the chewier variant. The truffle and earthy mushrooms flavours were subtle with a stronger hint of the truffle aroma.

onsen egg center

The Teriyaki Chicken and Scallion pizza was stronger in flavours and I liked it more than the Half & Half. Wished I had a glass of ice cold Asahi!

Teriyaki Chicken and Scallion pizza @$17

so messy, so tasty

If you are looking for something more homely, try My Gohan. The queue seemed to move pretty fast over here and we crafted a meal comprising of Hokke Hiraki, Mentaiko Tofu Gratin, Hijiki Salad and Zaru Udon.

"Create My Gohan" meal @$20.90

The hokke fish was plump and meaty with a good mouthfeel. I was most impressed by the chewy Zaru udon. So refreshing when eaten chilled! Absolutely loved it!

First time seeing tofu gratin though. The taste of mentaiko was mild here.

Mentaiko Tofu Gratin @$2.50
(cold) Zaru Udon @$4

Hijiki Salad @$1.50

Thank you Samantha, RE&S for the invite and for the tour around the dining hall. Congratulations on the opening of &JOY Dining Hall!
