BWB | Burger VS Wings + Bar @ Orchard Central

0 comments
Located at Level 11 of Orchard Central and it has been 2 years since last visit. Read about previous visit here. We were just in time for their Happy Hour where draft beer is on 1-for-1. A pint for $18++ or half pint for $13++.

Kronenbourg Blanc
Since there was just the two of us, we ordered burger and chicken wings. The place was busy as expected on a Friday evening. But its alfresco area was practically empty.

As we were sharing, we had requested for the burger to be cut into halves. Service staff obliged but I do agree with other people who had commented before me, that the presentation of the burger was just plain, uninteresting.

BWB Classic @$21.90++
angus beef patty (medim doneness), egg sunny side-up, tomato, bacon, onions, chili con carne, cheese

For wings, we chose the chili crab flavour. Glad to see that the wings did not shrink over the years, and again, it didn't score any points for the plating. Thankfully, the taste was still good. Messy to eat but enjoyable.

Chili Crab Wings @$15.80++

Expect to pay about $24 per pax for a main course and a beer (after using The Entertainer App).

Dallas Restaurant and Bar @ Sky Garden Suntec City

0 comments
Sky Garden at Suntec, is a long way to walk from City Hall MRT. There was a period of time when I wanted to try Dallas chicken wings. That period was when there was only one Dallas outlet, at Boat Quay. Then, there came another period of time when people were raving about the grilled corn. I wanted to try that too.

So, chose this restaurant to meet with HS 'coz she's treating. Yay! Moreover, we can use The Entertainer App here. Double yay!

The restaurant offers al-fresco area as well as the cooler, air-conditioned indoor dining. No prize for guessing which one we opted for. Liked the decor, and the indoor dining gave a rather classy feel.

browsing the menu

Happy Hour on weekdays lasts till 8pm. The cocktails which were originally priced at $18 or $19 are going for $12 during the magical hour. Ooh, so I got myself an 'Old Fashioned'.

Old Fashioned @$12++ (HH) - Maker’s Mark, sugar, orange & aromatic bitters

First sip, was like "Oh, whiskey." Haha, what was I expecting? Must have lost my mind for a while. What's the difference between scotch and bourbon? According to wiki, scotch is whisky made in Scotland and bourbon is whiskey made in USA. OoOooh... and bourbon is distilled from corn while scotch is generally from malted barley. So, all bourbon is whiskey but not all whisky is bourbon. OoOOohhh...

So Maker's Mark is bourbon whiskey and whiskey being whiskey, you'll know when you taste one.

For mains, we ordered ribs and cod fish. Food took quite a while to arrive and we thought that the ribs looked quite blackened! Don't be alarmed. A cut through the knife revealed tender flavourful meat, especially when chewed with some fatty bits. Nice.

Baby Back Berry @$30++ (half rack)

slow braised pork ribs that's easy to cut

The miso cod was pretty spot on with its flavours too. Pretty greens of broccoli and sweet peas, quick squeeze of lemon onto the vege and fish, and voila, we are so ready to devour. Miso sauce was very strong in flavours so a small dab of that onto the fish would be more than sufficient. Cod was lovely.

Miso Glazed Cod @$32++ served on a bed of mash, seasonal vege and a dash of miso paste

For desserts, we satisfied one of our curiousity and ordered the chargrilled corn. The corn was delish! A combo of something spicy, cheesy, creamy and savoury sweet. Recommended.

chargrilled corn @$6++ (cut into halves for easy sharing)

The spicy came from the chipotle mayo, and it has parmesan cheese, lime and smoked spices sprinkled onto the corn. Yummeh!

Thank you Hui Shan for the treat!

The Boiler Louisiana Seafood & Beer @ Tai Seng

0 comments
While it is near Tai Seng MRT, it took a bit of walking and some faith in that there is a restaurant awaiting for you, somewhere in there. For first timers like me, I took about 6 minutes to walk and 10 minutes to ponder if I was lost. The directions would be something like this: Head out of Tai Seng MRT station, turn right and walk towards Harper Road. You should be able to see Sakae and Breadtalk buildings across the opposite side. No need to cross road but just to walk right ahead. If you passed by a bus stop, then that is correct. When you come across Howard Road, then turn right and walk straight. The streets are most likely empty except for a few foreign workers resting by the curbside. The buildings would look unoccupied especially during the weekends, dinner time. From afar, rejoice when one sees the Khong Guan building. Head towards it, and you'll pass by The Boiler.

at last
interior

Seems like if you intend to dine there during weekends dinner time, especially around 7pm, best to make a reservation as the place was really busy during the PH that we visited. After 8pm, the crowd dwindled. Reservation was easy via the Hungrygowhere website.

lobster on promo, but nothing beats the $1 promo that had ended

Arrived late, so the gang had polished off some snacks which included spam fries, nachos chips (was this with the prawn cocktail?) and wings. Heard that the spicy mid-wings were kind of sour and rather spicy.

last piece of spam fries
Louisiana Spicy Mid Joint Wings @$8.90++

Got myself a beerita, which was a bottle of Corona turned upside down, ontop of ice-blended slush. Hmm, how was this a margarita? Tasted just like beer and crushed ice with lemon.

Beerita @$11.90++

Of course, the main thing to order here is the Bombdiggity Bag. But it serves just 4 pax and we have 7. So ordered a Boiler's Duo Bag which is similar to Bombdiggity, except that it doesn't have crab. Handphones are kept neatly in the plastic cover that the restaurant provides. The helpful staff assisted with the plastic apron tying so that the clothes won't be splattered with the sauces.

Bombdiggity Bag @$139++
The Boiler's Duo Bag @$49++

Had the Bombdiggity with Garlic Butter sauce for the non-spicy tolerant eaters, and The Works for the Boiler's Duo Bag. Think we got the mild or medium for The Works. Each bag consist of clams, mussels, sausages and corns, and Bombdiggity had a dungeoness crab in it. For the two bags combined, we got 6 deep fried buns. These tiny pillowy buns were good to soak up the spicy sauce. Additional ones cost $1.50++ for 2 pieces.

my loot

More than half the table preferred the Garlic Butter sauce as it was more fragrant compared to the spicy one. Personally, I like The Works precisely for its spiciness. But, it was also a tad saltier. That's why it tasted good with beer. Keke.

Also ordered fish & chips to try. They ran out of fries, so it was replaced with potato wedges instead. Boy, it was good.

lovely potato wedges

Expect to spend about $60++ per pax for a seafood bag, snacks to share and a drink here.

Brewerkz @ Riverside Point

0 comments
Was invited to Brewerkz at Riverside Point, Boat Quay recently. Last visit to this outlet was during my first food trail ever, way back in 2011. A quick link here. It is about time to get re-acquainted.

Along with its craft beers, Brewerkz serves up American-styled cuisine in a functional space that shouts of  testosterone and sporty feel. The screens were showing American football and NBA while we were there. Atmosphere was boisterous, as expected.

The place was rather busy on a weekday night. Seems like everyone needed a drink after a hard day at work. So drink up. Responsibly of course. Heard that its microbrewery is capable of producing lots more so no worries, our throats are never parched while we are here.

yes, please
SG50 promo

Ever wanted to try all of Brewerkz signature and seasonal beers but worry about calories and all? Good news, just get the beer sampler @$14++ where you can have 4 glasses of 125ml beer.

beer sampler of 14 beers
On hindsight, don't get all 14 at one go unless its shared amongst say, 6 pax. It gets warm pretty fast in our climate.

The full sampler has this combination:
Front row: golden ale, hopback, wheat beer, jubilee lager, pilsner
Second row: single hop - lemondrop, steam beer, irish red, black raspberry,  brown ale
Last row: IPA, oatmeal stout, Xipa and black pig (with highest percentage of alcohol)
from light to dark. Front row (left to right): pilsner, golden jubilee, wheat beer and hopback

Common beer profile - its bitter aftertaste. Some lingers longer than the other. For example, steam beer appeared light and mild (almost can taste the water) but has a very strong lingering bitter aftertaste. Even its black raspberry which has a fruity raspberry flavour and perfume, has that strong bitter finish. Still a man's drink, masked with some genteelness. The most outstanding taste profile, was the oat meal stout. Which surprisingly, tasted more of like a good 'ol strong coffee made even stronger by alcohol.

Thou shall not drink with an empty stomach. So let's bring the food out~

For group gatherings, let's start with a huge-ass bowl of soba noodle salad. It was a pretty good bowl of tasty salad. Asian flavoured, with crispy strips for that texture contrast, fresh leaves and lots of good sized teriyaki chicken strips. Half-sized of this bowl can be a main course for me!

soba noodle salad @$23++
If salad is not your thing, how about meat skewers? Loved it! Maybe because this place is American-styled, the skewers felt like an upsize from normal asian satays/yakitori. Look at those firm meat, with good layers of fats that's been grilled to a sizzling drip. Flavourful on its own.

chipotle pork belly satay @$14++
Other appetisers included buffalo wings and mussels. The hot buffalo wings are not spicy actually.

mussels with in-house made bread
hot buffalo wings @$18++

If you are really, really into meat, then go all out for the 3 Big Pigs. A platter of baby back ribs, crispy crackling pork knuckle and kielbasa sausages. Served with sauerkraut and mashed potato.

3 Big Pigs @$90++
The knuckle required quite a bit of strength to cut through but it was worthed the effort. Moist meat yet firm and that crackling of a skin with a thin layer of fats underneath. Yummy. The sausages were easy to eat and none of those overpowering herbs. The ribs were fork tender and reminiscent of asian flavours.

Did someone ask for more beer? How about the Jubilee Lager, that is currently being paired with asian inspired satay seafood angel hair pasta for just $25++ during lunch hour.

For the cowboys in us, there is a matching Cowboy Burger. Oozing with masculinity (especially with that knife skewered right in the heart of the handmade minced patty. Bam!

Cowboy Burger @$24++
peek-a-boo! beef patty topped with bacon and melted cheddar cheese

Ah, I think we were supposed to put in the raw stuffs of lettuce, tomato and onion slices into the bun but who remembers that when the patty was calling out to us? No time, man! That side of sweet potato fries was distracting too. Can't stop eating that.

potato fries should go with ketchup, even if it is truffled. No?

To wind down from all the drinks and food frenzy, what did we do? We ate somemore! Desserts time.

chocolate fudge cake @$14++
oreo ice-cream cake @$14++
warm brownie @$14++

The ones that we got were all good. Thought we could eat no more, but the desserts were devoured in no time. My favourite desserts that night? Warm brownie stacked with ice-cream that didn't melt too fast and further topped with honeycomb. The sweetness levels were upped seemingly in its stacked order from low to high.

Many thanks to our host, Adora for introducing the many flavours of Brewerkz. The hardworking staff whom took care of our table, and HGW for the invite. The friends; Weighty Man, Running Man, The Arctic Star, that dined together that night, thank you too.

The Cornerstone @ Bishan Park 2 | The Entertainer App Singapore

0 comments
Located at Bishan Park 2, just a short distance from the carpark. Was there on a wet evening. With a few more minutes remaining on Happy Hour (HH), we got ourselves a glass of red (Chilean wine).

Cabernet Sauvignon @$12++ and Merlot @$10++ during HH

Ordered a mushroom risotto and a half BBQ chicken. The risotto was pretty creamy and liked that the grains were adequately cooked. Good to share amongst two pax, otherwise could be quite 'jelak'.

mushroom risotto (vegetarian) @$23++

country style smoked BBQ chicken (half) @$18++

The chicken was quite enjoyable, especially the dark meat portion. Also had an extra order of french fries with 3 dips. Think there were tartar, mayo and one with cheese. But french fries taste better, if eaten with ketchup.

The place is pet friendly and patrons were seen with pet dogs at the al-fresco area.

Expect to spend about $45 per pax. With The Entertainer Singapore App, we saved $18 from our bill.

Morganfield's @ Suntec City

0 comments
Located at Level 1 of Suntec City, Tower 4. Nearest MRT is Promenade.

If one is walking from City Hall MRT and landed in the vastness called Suntec (and at its current configuration), just head towards the Giant Hypermart which is at basement level. Near Giant Hypermart, go back up to Level 1 and go out of the glass door and you'll see the restaurant.

home of sticky bones

Was invited to try its Christmas Feast Platter in this latest outlet at Suntec City. Here is the write-up on the experience a year ago at its Star Vista branch.

nice lights
here for this mammoth platter

ready to start

For starters, we sampled two items; Beer Candied Bacon and Basketful of Pork.

Beer Candied Bacon @$8.90++
Basketful of Pork @$15.90++

The candied bacon was pretty interesting. Chewy, sweet and salty but required a bit of jaw work. The younger folks liked it alot but personally preferred the basketful of pork. It had popcorn pork, pork sausage and candied bacon. Popcorn pork goes really well with White Christmas Sangria.

White Christmas Sangria (white wine, peach puree, diced green apples and oranges) @$16.90++

White wine mixed with fruits? Yup that's my kind of drink.

Now, let's get down to business. Morgan's Christmas Feast that's meant for 4-5 pax. If it's for all female, then 6 pax can share the platter as well.

Morgan's Christmas Feast @$149.90++

This huge platter consists of 4 grilled sausages, half slab each of cranberry and hazelnut sticky bones, 2 smoked turkey legs, bourbon marmalade glazed ham slices, sides of potatoes, glazed carrots, caramelized onions, green beans and 2 corn bread.

The turkey legs were nicely done here. Carve or slice the meat sideways to avoid the hard bits and you'll be rewarded with moist, tender slices of meat. Liked the long beans to balance out the otherwise, meaty meal. Can imagine the guys chugging down beer while tearing through all the meats!

As usual, Morganfield's corn bread is not to be missed.

moist, sweet tasty corn bread

Or, if you prefers something else for desserts, you can opt to top up $9.90++ for every purchase of Christmas Feast platter to get a Cranberry 'n' Peach Crumble.

Cranberry 'n' Peach Crumble (UP $13.90++)

Good news is that Morgan's Christmas Feast platter is also available for take-away and delivery. On top of that, and not valid for dine-in, would be the Bourbon Marmalade Glazed Leg of Ham (@$168.90+) and Christmas Hazelnut Roast Chicken (@$28.90+).

Bourbon Marmalade Glazed Leg of Ham (~4 to 5kg) @$168.90+ for delivery/takeaway only
Christmas Hazelnut Roast Chicken (~800 to 900g) @$28.90+ for delivery/takeaway only
side by side comparison of size

The behemoth leg of ham, was seriously good. Tender, tasty fats especially the charred bits and goes well with wine, beer or any alcohol for that matter. It was so good.

bourbon marmalade glazed leg of ham (thick slices)

There is an early bird discount of 10% for confirmed orders by 30 Nov 2014. Hence, do call the respective outlets to enquire. Orders must be made 5 days in advance and there is a delivery charge of $25 per location.

Thank you Morganfield's for the invite, Joey and Mr J. Gopiraj for hosting us. Merry Christmas in advance!
