[Media Invite] GO Noodle House (GNH) 有间面馆 @ 313 Somerset

From across the causeway, GO Noodle House has made its way into the heart of Orchard. Located at basement of 313 Somerset, GNH uses a special family recipe for its superior fish bone broth.

menu
what would you like to have?

Have you tried their signature bursting pork meatball in superior broth with mi xian? The meatballs though had a dense exterior, its inside was bouncy and moist. The broth was indeed of a superior taste. The mi xian (米线) or rice noodles (looked like thick bee hoon) was done in Jiangxi province-style. The smooth strands of noodles were slippery and slurp worthy.

Interesting to note that hua tiao wine (花雕酒) would be added to the broth when served. GNH has their own bottled hua tiao wine for customers to purchase and store on-site, so that you could add as much to the broth as you like!

For the noodles, the 5-years hua tiao wine is typically used. Had a taste of the 10-years hua tiao and it had stronger herb flavours when sipped slowly.

To accompany the noodles, one could order fried snacks to munch as well. We tried the five spice meat roll (ngoh hiang), crispy fu chuk (fried beancurd skin), and gold coin bak kwa. The fu chuk was a tad oily but it was full of flavours! Loved the well fried treats!

look at those skin!

Order up a bowl of handmade fish paste in superior soup if you want an unadulterated taste of the broth. More umami! The fish paste texture was surprisingly softer than anticipated.

For something 'meatier', go for the latest item in the menu; Fresh frog (田鸡) in superior soup with bee hoon. This was my favourite bowl. The meat was sweet, and the flavourful soup (loved the sliced bittergourd) was well absorbed by the thin bee hoon. Perfect combo!

For the beef lovers, you could try the Trio beef combo (premium beef slice, beef tendon & beef ball) with mi xian. The beef balls tasted rustic while the beef slices was lightly poached and flavourful. Wonder if it was marinated prior. The basil leaves added a refreshing touch to the beefy bowl.

If you don't fancy the noodles soup (but why?!), you could try the Hakka sauce homemade noodles with century egg. In fact, I'd recommend the Hakka sauce noodles. It was that good.

This was my first time seeing century egg on a plate of noodles. There are fried lardo bits, shallots, minced pork, black fungus, and anchovies in there. Mix it well, and you'll get a plate of super flavourful noodles that had a hint of sesame oil to it. This plate was well liked by the group.

Thirsty? Get a cup of the sweet and cooling dates wolfberry tea. I got the iced version.

Next, we also sampled a spicy noodles; the double bursting fishball (fish roe) in homemade spicy soup with thin bee hoon. The fishball had a gooey centre of fish roe. One needs to be careful when biting into this as its center would still be hot. I can't pinpoint the flavours of the spicy soup and it was probably just 0.5 out of 5 in the spice level. Not to worry as their house chili dip was really good and got kick. Just pour some of this over the noodles to enjoy a level up in spice!

Thank you Tiara for the invite and GO Noodle House for hosting the tasting. My favourite bowls are the fresh (whole) frog in superior soup with bee hoon, the hakka noodles and the signature bursting meatballs.

Birds Of A Feather @ Amoy Street

Had a late lunch at Birds of a Feather recently, on a Sat noon. It is a cosy place, with nice decor and friendly ambiance. Suitable for peeps with laptop who wants to work while sipping a cocktail or two, and to enjoy Sichuan flavoured snacks or creatively delicious fusion Chinese meal.

Loved the menu with the printed drawings instead of actual photos of the food.

I was intrigued by the Sichuan Oxtail Soup with Chinese Yam Noodles. Like, what does Sichuan Oxtail Soup would taste like? And what in the world is a Chinese Yam Noodles? So many questions and I eagerly await for the dish to arrive.

Kris ordered the "Red Birdie Noodle" that comes with "Bang-Bang Chicken" and an onsen egg. I know nothing about "Bang-Bang Chicken" but since it is a red, it must be pretty spicy!

How about a glass of rose to go along with the food? Why, yes please.

With drinks in-hand, we needed some appetisers. We ordered the "Charcoal Grilled Pork Bits" as I have not tried this before. Thank you Chef Eugene for sending us the complimentary plate of "Find the Chicken in the Chillies"! Now we have double dose of meats!

Find the Chicken in the Chillies @$16++

The Charcoal Grilled Pork Bits comprises of grilled pork belly slices, baby potatoes and sweet potatoes are smothered with a layer of those Chinese skewer magic spices similar to its sister restaurant at 51Soho. Loved everything on this plate!

It wasn't that hard to find the chicken amongst the chillies because there were some chunky bits in it. Yummy! The mix had peppercorn, leek bits and dried chillies deep fried till slightly crisp. Don't leave the leek bits behind if you enjoy bursts of sweetness amongst the fiery spicy taste.

For Sichuan Oxtail Soup, I was pleasantly surprised by its visual. The inclusion of arlette pastry added to the aesthetics. Tasty too with its buttery flaky texture that's fragrant with spring onion. The first spoonful of soup revealed a broth that was beefy, with hints of herbs and not overly rich. Very enjoyable. The Chinese Yam Noodles turned out to be flat sheets of al-dente chewy noodles that had similar texture to QQ rice cake. Very good. Oh, be careful when you dip into the chilli dip provided... so spicy!

can't get enough of this noodles!

The oxtail itself was meaty and superbly tender while maintaining its flavours. Thumbs up for this!

you have become a favourite of mine

The Red Birdie Noodle is a dry version with spicy mala sauce and served with condiments that were meant to be tossed into the noodles for a good mix while the Bang-Bang Chicken was to be eaten separately.

well tossed Japanese noodles

The Red Birdie Noodle was strongly flavoured and goes well with a drink. The "Bang-Bang Chicken" had a nice sweet sauce (was it 沙茶酱?) to it and the chicken breast meat likeable (this is coming from one that doesn't like chicken breast usually).

Compliments to Chef Eugene and I've enjoyed the meal at Birds of a Feather. Weekend lunch date with Kris and Tiara.

Suggest to order 3 appetisers with a shared main (for lighter eaters), or 1 appetiser with 2 shared mains and a dessert for 2 pax. Expect to spend about $45 to $55 per pax for a meal here, with a drink.

Mak's Noodle 麥奀記 @ Westgate Jurong East

Had something light for late lunch, so was really going to check out the menu only. Then, was approached by the service staff and somehow, ended up trying its beef brisket and tendon noodles. Haha! Subconsciously, I had wanted to give this a try, perhaps?

Had heard from others that the noodles here is of a smaller portion. Just nice, since I wasn't very hungry.

Beef brisket and tendon noodle (牛筋牛腩捞面) @$10++

Verdict? The soup was a tad too peppery. The noodle was not well tossed, so one gotta mix it well. That bottle of spicy sauce goes well with the noodles. Sauce had hints of tangerine peel and not too salty. The meat was tender but the tendon could do with more time in the pot. And, addition of some green leafy vegetables would be good.

陕西味道 (Shan Xi Wei Dao) @ Minzuyuan Road, Beijing

Here is the address: 朝阳区民族园路1号唐人街商场1楼(近大润发班车处). Basically, it's located at the Chinatown Plaza, Minzuyuan Road.

It does a pretty good version of the 肉夹馍 (rou jia mo). Chose the half/half option where the meat is half lean half fat. Good choice. Nicely juicy with non-dry-out version of the 'bread'.

One of our colleague was feeling under the weather, so he ordered chicken soup noodles.

But the main attraction of this shop (for us, at least), was a noodle called 'biang biang' noodles. Here's its wiki link. Its name is a word that contain many many words inside. Here's a graphic for illustration as I don't think there's anyone who has the time to write it out...

康师傅私房厨牛肉面 (Master Kong Chef's Table) @ Minzuyuan Road, Beijing

Located at No. 2 Minzuyuan Road, Chaoyang District, Beijing. According to wiki, 康師傅 (Kang shi-fu or Master Kong) is a brand owned by Tingyi Holding Corp, from Taiwan.

The place is pretty close to the hotel that we're staying at.

Specializing in beef noodles, it also has rice option.

The small dish of preserved vege helped to give the soup a little lift.

The soup was flavourful but not quite strong. There's vinegar on the table for that added oomph.

red bean cake

For desserts, we ordered the coconut red bean white cake. It's like a pudding but a little more solid than pudding. Not overly sweet.

The main dish price ranged from ¥26 to ¥36. This place also has set meals and has options to top up for dessert/side-dish and a drink.

There's also a discount card that entitles the user a 12% discount. This card can be bought for ¥10, and comes with two luggage tag.
