[Keepers Playground Of Infinite Happiness] Come Eat, Shop, Play, Gram @ National Design Centre

Head on down to Keepers Playground Of Infinite Happiness at National Design Centre over these two weekends from 27 to 29 Jul and 3 to 5 Aug 2018 11am to 9pm. Check out the various retail pop-ups from the artisans and craftsmen. Bring your family, friends and money!

National Design Centre is located at 111 Middle Road and within walking distance from Bras Basah MRT. Explore all levels and embark on a journey of discovery. For those that are in the know, head on right up to Level 5.

If you're a chocolate lover, head right up to Level 3 and meet with the good folks from Fossa Chocolate and Demochoco でもチョコ. Tried the Apple Brandy chocolate from Demochoco and it was good. Tasted like nama chocolate, with Manjari (64%) chocolate blended with Nikka’s Single Cask Hirosaki Apple Brandy (aged 12 years). That brings back memory of Nikka factory visit in 2015.

It was kind of interesting to just walk around the area and to discover interesting stuffs along the way.

As I was walking down the stairs, something caught my eye as it was looking out of a window. It was one of the ten mini Miuns one could find 'hidden' in National Design Centre.

National Design Centre is also having its Fifty Years of Singapore Design exhibition at Level 1. The exhibition chronicles the development of the Singapore design scene from the early 60s to till date.

At Level 1, if you're feeling hungry, there's Tanuki Raw with hearty food. But, it was so crowded, so decided to shop around Kpok @NDC.

If you feel like having ice-cream, there's ButterKnife Folk with their delicious range of gelato. Hmm, there's an exotic and localized Chicken Rice ice-cream too. Are you game for it? I wanted the Infinite Happiness, but alas, it had eluded me. In plainspeak, it was sold out. So, I got the blueberry cheesecake instead.

[Busan] The Plate @ Gamcheon Culture Village 감천문화마을

One day in early Oct 2017, we were at Gamcheon Culture Village and had probably walked a couple of kilometres here and there before we decided to stop for brunch/tea? Whichever it was, we were hungry! Chanced upon this place that looked pretty cool from the outside. It said "Coffee Brunch" and that was enough to propel us inside. That and those other people eyeing this place as well.

I thought I saw a puddy tat. Double blink and I did. It did not care for the crowds and neither did it care when I approached. Meow.

The shop has a retail area downstairs and it had a bit of souvenir as well as postcards etc.

Order and pay for the food at the cashier downstairs and the staff would send it up towards the second floor. It was a rather steep climb up.

It was actually rather nice to dine there. Comfortable and homey. Sit by the window and slowly watch the world go by.

The drinks was served in mugs with beautiful flower print on them. That's a nice change from sterile looking containers.

We ordered a couple of items to share. The fish and chips and breakfast plates looked quite fitting to the theme. Very British-like, especially those pale looking chips.

Then, we had some somewhat eclectic items such as pasta and...fried rice? The fried rice with egg was so homely. Surprisingly, it was a taste that we didn't know we missed.

Was hungry, so we tucked in. Enjoyed the relaxing atmosphere, the holiday mood and to plan our next meal. Yes, we are like that.

Trung Nguyen Coffee @ International Plaza

Trung Nguyen is a coffee chain from Vietnam, and first taste of it was in 2011 when we were at Ho Chi Minh. Lunch hour at International Plaza always sees throngs of office workers looking for a place to dine.

This place is not so crowded so we were there after our meeting. Lunch set $11.90 consist of a main dish, an appetiser and coffee. Pay at the cashier and await for food. Noticeably, those who ordered noodles will get their orders first. Perhaps, it was easier to prepare? One could see two big pots of soup bubbling at the counter.

I got myself a banh mi pâté which consist of french baguette stuffed vegetable, a slice of ham and chicken liver pate. For appetiser, I had the fresh spring roll. And of course, coffee.

The spring rolls were prepped prior and one just need to peel off the cling wrap from the small plate. It was compact with rice vermicelli, lettuce, cucumber, cilantro and a prawn. The sauce was like a watery sweet chili sauce but necessary. Light and mild.

There's something about chewing on a baguette with stuffings. The more you chew, the tastier it becomes. Loved all the lettuce, pickles, thin spread of pâté with each bite. Yums.

The staff forgot about my coffee so had to remind them. All the cups were pre-prepared and one just needed to top it with hot water for it to start dripping.

The coffee taste was agreeable. Not too sweet. The temperature after drip was right for drinking. Just need to stir the coffee to get the condensed milk mixed well.

Yakitori Taira 焼き鳥 平良 @ Japan Food Town Wisma Atria

Yakitori Taira is now occupying the shop space of what was previously Taki and Bar Nippon. Was at client's place in Orchard for a meeting and had a chance to drop by Wisma Atria for dinner. Well, having a soon-to-expire $10 voucher to redeem was also part of the reason of being at Japan Food Town.

Yakitori Taira originated from a sushi shop called Sushi Taira in Shirokanedai, Roppongi. Sounds upmarket! Nevertheless, there's an opening promo of between 20% to 30% off on their set menu. Original price ranges from $30 to $70 for the sets. The difference seemed to be the number of yakitori sticks included. Went with the $20 (UP $30) set with 4 yakitori sticks, with the yakitori decided by the Chef. Hmm. Am starting to wonder if they'd going to give all vegetable sticks!

For the set menu, one gets to choose the mini-don. There were 4 options but I just went with the salmon don. The waitress says that the don in the set meal doesn't come with ikura. That's ok, I thought. Took a quick look at the price and the normal salmon don with ikura costs $18 per bowl. Understandably, they can't possibly put an $18 bowl in a $30 course meal.

For drinks, I got myself $10 sake for two small glasses. One could choose from 3 available choices. Had one from Gifu prefecture and it tasted mild. The next glass was better, the Nenohimatsu Junmai Ginjyo (Morita) Aichi. Tasty!

The starter was a small cup of chicken soup. Much like the soup from Tsukada Nojo. Lip-smackingly good. But careful not to burn your lips because it was super hot.

Did not really look at the menu before ordering, so thought the next course would be the salmon don. Was wrong. It turned out to be a tofu dish. This was served warm. Thought it would be clean and mild but I was wrong. The broth was savoury and tangy. Not sure what was in it, but overall, it was a nice hot dish.

There was a certain umami to this dish. Lovely! Soup, salad, tofu and a glass of sake was enough to make me start feeling a tad full. Perhaps, it was due to the long'ish interval between the dishes. Not too sure if the dishes were supposed to come out bit by bit or served all at once.

Next up was a small salad. Loved the citrus soy dressing but the rockets were bitter. Thought Japanese salad usually would use other greens such as lettuces, or spinach... Nevertheless, it was good to have salad in our meals.

As I was at the counter, was already anticipating which yakitori stick was for me. The first stick appeared as I was about to complete the salad.

The sunagimo, in other words the chicken gizzard. Lightly salted. The texture was good. Finished in 20 seconds.

Feed me more. What's next? What's your guess? I was sincerely hoping that they would not give that piece of white meat...but they did. Chicken breast or also known as sasami. Ugh. So lean, and with a tiny dab of wasabi on those white'ish flesh. It was not dry, but this just wasn't my thing.

This was quickly followed by chicken thigh yakitori (secret yay!). All three sticks were without tare and only lightly salted. Now, what would be the finale stick?

Turned to be something similar to chicken heart but a lower part? Aiya, my Japanese not so good so the Japanese staff who served the yakitori made a gesture of his heart and slightly downwards. Orh, but couldn't quite catch what was the name of this stick except it sounded like hatsusomethingsomething.

Goodness, that was the best stick for the night. The chicken hatsusomethingsomething yakitori drenched in tare (sauce) was the best ever! Bouncy bouncy texture that's also 'crunchy' in a delicate way. Yums.


The biggest letdown, got to be the salmon mini-don. The rice was at fault. It was grainy and non-sticky, unlike Japanese rice.

Fortunately, the set meal came with ice-cream. Flavours available are the usual yuzu, goma and matcha. Guess my choice.

[Taiwan] 李仔哥 (Lee Zai Ge) 爌肉飯 @ Xinyi Road, Puli Township, Nantou

After our good stay at Sun Moon Lake, it was time to head back towards Taipei. We went to visit Puli Wine Brewery and we got hungry thereafter. It was almost 1pm before we stopped by this shop that Sam, our local guide suggested. Braised pork rice for lunch? Yes please.

It feels like a hometown eatery where parking space is limited and by the roadside. Lucky us, we managed to find a spot within walking distance to the shop. They have seats upstairs so one need to place order at the counter downstairs for food and drinks, make payment and then get a table upstairs. There are washrooms available upstairs and differentiated for males and females.

Mostly uncles and aunties were seen in the shop. Local tourists, they seemed. Sam mentioned that they have a special off-menu item called tui ku rou 腿裤肉 (leg pants meat?), or maybe they meant the upper limb meat. Not quite sure but Sam warned us that this is one piece of fatty meat!

Was seriously thirsty by the time we got to this shop. Partly due to the alcohol tasting at Puli earlier. Keke. The drinks was nice but the tiny tiny fen yuen (flour balls) makes it really hard to get to the liquid. Ugh.

Very quickly, lunch is served. We ordered fried pork ribs rice, braised pork belly rice, one dried preserved vege braised rice and two specials of fatty meat rice. Side dishes of braised items and stir-fried lettuce. The lettuce was the only greens amongst the browns.

Had a quick question for our guide as to why the braise sauce in Nantou, southern of Taiwan, is so light. For Hokkien or Cantonese style of braising, usually we will use the dark soy sauce and the colour would be much darker. He pondered, and answered. He also does not know why! Surprisingly, while there were plenty of fats for the meat, it wasn't cloyingly oily. It was just soft collageny goodness. The meat was also rather lean in the sense the fats were all on the skin part. Yummy with the bamboo shoots. Worth ordering.
