[Media Invite] Beyond Pancakes @ Marina Square Mall

Pannenkoek? Galettes? Now you have can them all at Beyond Pancakes. This halal-certified casual eatery is located at Level 3 of Marina Square Mall, serves a variety of European influenced pancakes, burgers and pastas.

menu
As usual, we went with the Chef's recommendation. For hors d'oeuvre, we had the Nachos Set. Yes, that's French for appetizer. The nachos were actually toasted crispy crepe which was served warm and crispy, then loaded with mozarella cheese, avocado strips, onions, olives, jalapenos and topped with a beautiful sunny side up. For the set, it was served with cheese sauce, spring onion dip and cheesy sundried tomato dip. The spring onion dip was refreshing but my favourite was the cheesy sundried tomato dip.

Nachos Set @$10.90

If you are ordering the Nachos Set, I do urge you to eat it as soon as it arrived. So good to have warm crispy crepe scooping up those yummy dips which quickly made their exit into our stomachs.

Next, we had the Chicken Bolognaise from the pasta section. Served with moderate amount of sauce and it sprinkled with parmesan cheese and fresh herbs. The noodles strands were soft. The flavours were mild.

Chicken Bolognaise @$13.90

Saumon Fume Galette @$14.90
Was pleasantly surprised by the presentation of the smoked salmon galette. Thin thin layer of French crepe made of wheat, had edges so crisps that it fell off as soon as our finger tips gave it the tiniest of a nudge, which was lined with pesto sauce and topped with avocado, smoked salmon and a sunny side up.

We ate it the way Europeans would usually have it, which was to break the yolk, smear it around before rolling up the pancake. I liked it! The flavours were balanced and the rolled salmon, avocado and pesto mix with the thin galette skin was a big hit amongst the group.

For most of us, we are more familiar with the American styled pancakes. Round, soft and fluffy, and usually sweet. At Beyond Pancakes, there are savoury pancakes to choose and we had Le Poulet.

Le Poulet @$12.90
Butter in semi-melting state and spring onion mushrooms on my pancakes? Yes, please! The taste of the pancake was mildly sweet and the combination of grilled chicken strips, capsicum, onions and cherry tomatoes on the side would make this dish slightly more substantial.

Having a meal at Beyond Pancake was like taking a pancake journey to around European continent.  Pannenkoek was our next dish, and this is a Dutch-style pancake. Thin crepe, almost like a more hardy popiah-skin and topped with sliced chicken, black pepper sausages, turkey bacon, onions, capsicum, olives, and mozarella cheese.

De Kip @$13.90

No one resists desserts, right? Neither did we. This is for the sweet-toothed ones. The plate that we had was a special order of singular pancakes for tasting. Usual order would be Short (2 pieces), Medium (4 pieces) and Tall (6 pieces). Price ranges from $5.90 to $10.90 for Short.

(front counter clockwise) strawberry cream cheese, plain, chocolate chip and blueberry
Cheesy Nutella Roll @$14.90

The Cheesy Nutella Roll was basically Pannenkoek rolled with cream cheese, nutella, choco biscuit crumbs, served with vanilla ice-cream and peaches. The sweetness level was just right. Most of us were happy with just the original and the chocolate chip pancakes with butter and maple syrup.

My favourites were the Saumon Fume Pannenkoek, Le Poulet and the chocolate chip pancake.

Good halal option for pancakes.

The Armoury x Yellow Cup Coffee @ South Beach Avenue

Cosy and casual young vibes all round, The Armoury x Yellow Cup Coffee is a business where the brothers are in-charge. This is a place where you get craft beer, burgers and coffee all under one roof. Chanced upon this place during one of the weekends, and with Happy Hour prices, got myself a Hawaiian Kona draft beer to try.

on tap
hmm
happy pricing
sampler

The cool thing about this place is that the people here are friendly. The craft beers on tap are mostly American and if you weren't sure of what to get, they were alright with offering a sampler if you're already bought a drink or if you ask really nicely.

They have Rogue ale the hazelnut brown nectar one, Stone IPA and coffee stout amongst others. Have had those elsewhere so this time round, chose the Kona Golden Ale.

Aloha

The beer was light and balanced, pretty easy to drink though it was rather early that day.

Kona Golden Ale (4.4% ABV) @$6 (HH)

For food, we sampled the Beer Battered Chicken Cutlet on Waffles for savoury and for the sweets, we had the Berry Ricotta Pancake (special order and depends on availability of ingredients, as the on-menu version was matcha).

Beer Battered Chicken Cutlet on Waffles @$21

The beer battered chicken had nicely crisp batter that was music to the ears. Yums! It had a bit of salted egg lava drizzled onto the cutlet, served with sunny side up which oozes nicely when sliced and some dots of ricotta cheese. On the overall, the chicken thigh was well marinated and tasty but it was also a bit on the sweeter side. Preferred it to be more savoury and perhaps with a touch more of spice like chili flakes or chili padi. The waffles was nicely eggy. Would have loved to bite into these chicken cutlet again!

I'm the only one with beer while the rest were happily sipping their honey or nutella latte. Then, I got a spoonful of nutella to try. What did I do? Why, have it with beer of course! Surprisingly, this combo works. In fact, it works extremely well with the Hawaiian Kona beer.

The coffee here is from Yellow Cup Coffee and using the La Marzocco machine.

And, the Berry Ricotta Pancake had like 3-stacks of pancake in there and topped with lots of seasonal berries; we got blueberries, strawberries; raspberries, yuzu gel and mascarpone cheese.

We were stuffed from eating too much that day with Fynn's being our first brunch stop.

young vibes

Worth checking out if you are in the vicinity, as they do have a good selection of drinks and good food. Or, drop by for a drink and casual chat with the young bosses.

GRUB @ Bishan Park 1

First time visiting during lunch hour on a weekday. To get here, one could take a cab and drop off at the Bishan Park carpark. Informed the taxi uncle to take us via Sin Ming Avenue.

The days of the long queues might have passed, but this place is still pretty busy during lunch hour. Lunch sets are priced at $15 and $17 and you'll get additional cake, on top of your burger or main course. Quite a good deal, considering that the average cost for a burger is about $13, so that $2 extra would nett you a decent slice of cake for desserts. If you get a pasta dish, for example one that costs $17, then with the lunch set, the cake would practically pay for itself. Free, even better!

lunch set

Had tried the fish burger and the cheeseburger during previous visit, so this time round, went for the Har Cheong Gai Burger. I can almost imagine how it would taste like. Yums.

Food was served pretty fast. All burgers come with fries, but one could opt for a small salad as well. Needed my greens, so no prize for guessing what I had. Tangy vinaigrette and pleasingly sourish.

The patty for the har cheong gai was fried till a deep brown colour. Very very crispy batter. Am thinking that if the burger was served with those fragrant sambal belachan, then the oomph factor would probably have shot up by twofold!

Har Cheong Gai Burger @$13++ (ala-carte), or $15++ (lunch set)
are we ready?

Liked the portion of the meat. Easy to slice through and it was juicy thigh meat encased in crispy prawn paste batter. The prawn paste taste was rather mild but one could still detect it. The crispy batter somehow reminded me of luncheon meat chips.

juicy thigh meat

For the cakes, there were adequate options and variety to choose from. On our day of visit, there were about 6 cakes options and a key lime pie.

rainbow cake, key lime pie, lavender earl grey, ondeh-ondeh and milk tea cake

The top two cakes for me was the rainbow cake and the ondeh-ondeh cake. Don't you feel happy, just by looking at those colourful layers of soft sponge?

Burger VS Wings + Bar BWB @ Orchard Central

Located at Level 11 of Orchard Central. Accessible via the lifts. This  American styled restaurant has only been in operations recently, though its premise is not new. BWB occupies what used to be an Italian restaurant's space.

Familiar, yet different.

have you BWB, yet?
ample seating capacity
private room

Its concept is pretty simple. Burgers (vs) Wings. Food Fight. Now, nope. Don't start throwing the food around, ya. Food fight here, really refers to which item gets the most orders. Will it be the Burgers or will it be the Wings?

ready to fight?

Looking at its current menu, they have at least 9 burger variants and 10 for the wings. Really spoilt for choice. As though that's not enough, with every main course order one can do an add-on ($4.90++ for lunch or $7.90++ for dinner) to enjoy BWB's tapas and dessert buffet. Quite the value for money!

menu

What could one get from the tapas buffet section?

onsen tamago in ponzu sauce
baked macaroni, grilled vegetables and sheppard pie
mediterranean beef salad

For me, I got my fix of greens (or pink).  Coleslaw, potato salad, lettuce, beef salad, tempura water spinach and pappadum with tomato salsa

plate with assortment of stuff from tapas counter

Happy hour is till 8pm, and they do have Stella on tap. Get a pint of this during happy hour for $11++.

say hi to Stella

Did someone say signature cocktails? Of course, we got ourselves one. Cocktails are priced at $14++ each. BWBartini was quite yummy. Sweet.

Feeling famished yet? Let's meet the heavyweights.

Tyson Peanut Butter Burger (@$21.90++)
Pacific Izumi Fish Burger (@$15.80++)
BWB Classic Heavyweight Burger (@$19.90++)

The burgers looked quite gorgeous. Its beef burger patties are using stockyard angus beef. Enjoyable texture, doesn't feel oily and well seasoned. The beef burgers came with crispy, salty streaky bacon, cheddar cheese, egg sunny-side up and brioche bun.

Wagyu Beef Black Burger (@$28++), pre-cut upon request (for sharing)

The Black Burger was huge. Loaded with ingredients. Most noticeable was the avocado. If all those burgers felt too macho for you, no worries. They do have a dainty looking BWB Mini Burger Sampler (@$20.50++).

cute, right?
grilled tiger prawn black caviar mini burger

Though the burger does not include fries, it is still worthwhile to get one to share. Was pretty amazed to find that the fries retained its crispiness, though it was left out in the open for quite a long while.

cheese fries

If burger is not up your alley, then perhaps, chicken wings might do the trick? Meet the lightweight contenders.

Cajun BBQ Wings (@$15.80++)
hot buffalo wings (@$15.80++) with sweet mustard and bbq sauce
spicy level: medium

Let you be warned. Spicyness of medium, is already quite spicy. The heat will sting at you right away. Good thing that it also dissipates quite fast.

Likewise, there's also the Sampler Trio Wings for the undecided. The chicken wing wrap actually looked more like a popiah. Inside of it was minced chicken and prawn. Didn't like the stuffed wings though. There was a very strong, herb taste that I didn't enjoy.

cajun, jambalaya and chicken wing wrap

To add to the fun element of this restaurant, there might be special offers from time to time. So, keep a lookout for it!

watch out for such offers when dining-in

There are mini cakes and ice-cream at the buffet desserts counter.

mini cheesecake, tiny swiss roll and fruit pate

Swiss roll was too dry but the mini cheesecakes were quite rich. Fruit pate was coated with sugar, hence very sweet but quite interesting. Skip the swiss roll and go straight to ice-cream!

french vanilla and blueberry ice-cream with crispy rice toppings

Thank you HGW and KitchenLanguage for the invite and for hosting the dinner.
