[Jeju] Jeju Osung Traditional Restaurant 제주오성 @ Seogwipo

We started the day with breakfast at a traditional restaurant specializing in hairtail fish. The place was fairly easy to find and has free parking nearby.

Jeju Osung Traditional Restaurant

must be a good sign

The restaurant is located at Level 2 and accessible by stairs or lift inside the building. The lobby is beautifully decorated and there is a souvenir shop there as well.

The TV screen at the lift showed that Sanghyuk 상해기 (Korean famous mukbanger) has been to Jeju Osung before.

Was greeted when we reached the restaurant at Level 2 and brought to the table. The place was not busy at about 10am.

Order via the tablet screen available at each table. Pay by card or cash upon ordering.

let's order breakfast

We ordered the Braised Cutlass Fish for 2 pax, ala-carte order of grilled mackerel and sea urchin seaweed soup, additional 2 bowls of rice and a beer. Hehe, yes why not have tangerine beer at 10am.

this paste was interesting

The japchae side dish was pretty good. But the most interesting one was the boiled cabbage served with a type of fermented bean paste sauce that tasted pretty peculiarly umami but fishy. Interesting and it grows on you the more you eat it.

tangerine IPA

In Jeju, it is my daily mission to drink or eat something associated with hallabong or tangerines. Hehe. The tangerine IPA was refreshing although a bit odd to be drinking it so early...

Braised Cutlassfish in a Pot (for 2 pax) @₩69000

The 'Braised Cutlassfish in a Pot' consists of all the side dishes, a pot of braised cutlass fish and a long grilled version of it.

our meal

Staff will assist in deboning the grilled cutlass fish so that it is easier to eat. This fish has many many bones.

nice

One could taste the fish more in the grilled version but I love the braised version as the spicy sauce was very good to have with the rice. So tasty!

The extra order of mackerel was good too as it has a much firmer texture than the cutlass and has more oily mouthfeel.

The set also comes with seaweed soup and the difference between the regular ones versus the sea urchin one was that the added sea urchin gave the soup a certain creaminess. Other than that, the taste remained largely the same.

We were very full from all the food. Spent 108000 for breakfast.

[Jeju] Jeju Black Pig BBQ Dinner at Jeju dot @ Seogwipo

Jeju dot specializes in Jeju black pig Korean BBQ. We drove to the place from our hotel and it was a good 40 minutes ride. When we reached the end of our navigation, the place looked like a private residential area except there were plenty of cars parked in its compound.

Jeju dot carpark

The place was full when we reached at 6.43pm. Informed the staff that we would like to dine there without reservation and she indicated that we could leave our name and contact in the waiting list. Oh boy, but I do not have any local phone number though, so ended up just indicating the surname and number of pax. Hehe.

Went back outside to admire the sunset and watched other people's kids playing at the huge compound while we wait for the staff to call us.

evening in Jeju

And 10 minutes later, we got a table.

table all set

menu and kitchen

Oooh, the menu is all in hangul and so, it was time for Google Translate. The manager came to our table and asked us in Korean, for our order. I asked for his recommendation and then, he took out his mobile phone and typed something on it and showed it to us. Ahh, he is using Papago to say that he recommends the pork neck and pork belly. Each order is minimally 200gm and so for the 4 of us, to start with those. We agreed.

He also said that the meat will be pre-cooked before served to our table.

Ahhh, so the grill on our table was just to brown the meat slightly and then we could enjoy it. The manager just tossed the cut-up meat a little bit on the table grill and then informed us to start eating. And so we did!

The pork neck looked like little chunk of firm fat but it's not fatty. The texture was firm and tasted good.

dip it slightly in salt

The meat was gone in no time and the next cut was served. Ok, the pork belly was certainly more greasy and the meat still has that skin layer on it. This version is chewy.

Yes, we made somaek and enjoyed it with the meats. Hmm, we finished up both the pork neck and pork belly and might just as well order the last cut of the 3 available. Added 200gm of pork ribs to our order.

pork ribs

The sauce on the grill was intriguing and very flavourful, so I asked the manager what it was. He said it is anchovies sauce. It was that good and I found myself using this dip more than the other sauces.

so flavourful

We finished the dinner rather quickly in just one hour. Overall, my favourite cut is the pork neck for its unique texture. It is ok if you do not speak Korean as the manager at this place is adept at using translation app to communicate with customers.

Staff were courteous and I felt welcomed. We spent ₩134,000 for dinner.

[Jeju] Osulloc Tea Museum @ Seogwipo

Went to Osulloc Tea Museum to buy some souvenirs and to have tea-break. There's parking available so no worries if you're driving.

The place is really huge!

tea museum on the left

The cafe is at the inner section and one could browse the various items offered under the Osulloc brand such as tea, instant kombucha, cakes, chocolates etc.

The shop section was crowded with people busy browsing and carrying basket full of stuffs to bring home. The cafe section has a small queue but moves pretty quickly. Not sure why but our orders took a while to be ready while we saw later orders were served first.

I got myself one of the sets for just ₩18000 for a drink, a cake and an ice-cream. Pretty good value. The green tea drink came with a large dollop of the ice-cream. Double the joy!

Overall, satisfied with the food and beverage offered at Osulloc, especially their sets. Value for money.

[Jeju] Samseonghyeol Haemultang 삼성혈해물탕 본점 @20 Seondeok-ro 5-gil Seogwipo

Travelled to Jeju for the very first time with my foodie/travel buddies and was excited for the first meal in Jeju. Read about our non-food related activities via this post of where we went for our rental car as this was a continuation from there.

It was late lunch after we had gotten our rental car and fueled it up. It was time to fuel our famished tummies. Tracy had chosen our lunch spot before hand and it was on purpose to be near the rental car place. Let's go get some seafood stew!

Samseonghyeol Haemultang

live octopus

Was half expecting to be turned away as it was way past the last order time and the shop was ready to take their mid-day break. Fortunately, the boss indicated that we could dine in if we are able to finish our meal within 45 minutes. Ok, challenge on!

interior

Ordered a seafood stew good for 3 pax and a portion of abalone porridge. This was us being cautious as we were unsure of the portion size in Jeju. Plus we wanted to maintain some space for dinner, which will happen in a few hours time, haha~

Was ordering easy? Yes especially after the staff asked us if we could converse in Mandarin instead. Haha!

Banchan was served right after our order. Speedy service as we were the only ones in the restaurant.

six types of side dishes

We were given two sets of banchans and each set consists of 6 varieties. And yes, you could ask the staff to refill those that you preferred. The outstanding side dishes were the anchovies (tasted super nice/fresh) and the potato pancake. Kimchi was mellow yet not overly fermented. Whets our already active appetite!

And when the main dish was presented, it elicited plenty of 'oohs and aahs' from the entire table. A large stew pot, filled to the brim with seafood that's practically still moving.

Seafood stew (haemultang해물탕)

The pot consist of abalones, different types of clams, crab, mussels, beansprouts (lots of it!) and onions. The stew was probably at spice level 0.5 out of 10.

The nice staff, Ms Nie, enquired if we would like to have the stew brought back to the kitchen to speed up the cooking process since we were already famished and so we agreed. She took the pot back to the kitchen and reappeared with the pot bubbling.

She also advised us to eat up the octopus first before it gets all chewy. We obliged and yes, the texture was perfectly tender with a good gentle bite.

boiling away

Oh, there was abalone porridge too. Although am not a fan of abalone porridge in general, this bowl was impressive due to its sheer size. So much porridge for the 4 of us!

abalone porridge 전복죽

On hindsight, this place does have a more flavourful abalone porridge as compared to other places later on.

Haflway through, Ms Nie brought out a plate of a small grilled fish. Complimentary, she said. Wow, thank you to the boss for giving us this. She said it is '港口鱼' when asked about its type, to which literally means sea port fish? Ok!

grilled fish

Whatever this fish is, I liked it. The flesh was soft, and subtly sweet. I suppose with Jeju being so close to the sea, freshness is a daily occurrence.

Then, Tracy did her customary thing which is to add ramyun as the finale of the meal.

instant noodles

One of the tips given by the staff when eating this seafood stew, is to remove the shells after all the seafood had been cooked, to avoid it continuing to flavour the soup as prolonged boiling with shells in will eventually make the soup saltier (and that with the evaporation of the water).

finished in 40 minutes

All in all, we were satisfied with our meal and the service experienced by the friendly staff. Spent ₩101,000 for our late lunch (including non-alcoholic drinks). This was about SGD35 per pax.
