Wawa Lala Bee Hoon @ Fortune Centre

The ladies wanted to try this lala beehoon, so I tagged along. Located at Fortune Centre and seemed popular. Was able to spot the signage from across the road before reaching the building.

Was there at about 12pm on a Public Holiday and the place was starting to get busy. The system here is that diners should order and pay first before getting a table. Collect foods from either counter when they are ready. No buzzer, so just watch out for yours or sometimes, when diners were too engrossed in chatting, the friendly staff will call out to the table.

lunch for 4 pax

We ordered their Signature Power Drunken Lala Soup with either tang hoon or bee hoon options. Staff will ask if you would like it to be less spicy, and I actually will suggest to say yes to that. Reason was, we found out that the default 2 chilies strength, was spicier than expected. In my opinion, it was a level 3 out of 5 kind of spicy! Most likely the ginger used on that day contributed to that spiciness as well as the cut chilies in the soup.

Signature Power Drunken Lala Soup with glass noodles @$8.90

The glass noodle option worked better for the dish as it provided a greater contrast in texture. Otherwise, the rice vermicelli (bee hoon) option actually soaks up more of the soup, so it was tasty too!

plump fresh clams

Clams were nice and retained its sweetness. The wine strength in the soup was pretty mild. Quite a strong taste of ginger. The noodles was decorated by quite a bit of coriander, hence do inform the staff not to put any, if you don't like it.

For drinks, we had the homemade lime juice. Nice to quench thirst as well as to put out some of the spiciness!

Homemade Lime Juice @$2

Of course, we also ordered the strongly recommended seehum (fresh cockles). Wah... it had been so long since I had legit sized ones as these. Cravings satisfied. Plump and non-funky. Slurpilicious!

Fresh Cockles Marinated with Special Sauce @$12.90

big ones

For snacks, we also ordered the new Buffalo Wings. This reminded me of the toaster oven wings that I used to make, way back during my uni days. In comparison with the other dishes, I think buffalo wings was a tad pricey.

Buffalo Wings (6 pieces) @$8.90

buffalo wings

I liked the chawanmushi. Sweet dashi, and lovely custard texture. But, it'll be better if the clams were deshelled first...

Fresh Lala chawanmushi @$4.50

Overall conclusion, the signature dishes are tasty, value for money and staff are friendly. If you're not spice lord, then you may want to request for non-spicy version or a less spicy version of the lala soup.

Fat Bird 胖胖鸡 @ Liang Seah Street

It was time to have a meal together and this place was suggested by Darren/Jeff. Chinese food with chicken hotpot as the mains. Seems like they have a buffet option as well with the same/similar food from ala-carte menu.

We went for ala-carte to test test first, so to speak. It was like everyone's first time having a meal at this shop.

simple dinner

Think we got the Spicy & Fragrant Chicken, medium pot. It was decent but not the tastiest chicken pot that I ever had. We were in a group of 5, so there wasn't a whole lot of chicken meat in there but adequate as a side. Sauce was just a hint of spicy, so it was nice to pour over the rice. Staff would come by to refill the soup for the chicken pot.

Spicy & Fragrant Chicken 香辣鸡公煲 ($32.80 Medium)

Spicy Chicken Cubes 辣子鸡 ($19.80)

The Spicy Chicken Cubes here also paled in comparison to others that I had tried before. The chicken here was somewhat dry and a tad hard after deep fried. Spice level was manageable. Loved the nuts that they put in there.

I didn't manage to take a picture of Wok Fried Fragrant Yam 香炒芋头 but it was good. Order this one as a snack. Yums.

String Beans with Minced Pork & Dried Chilli 干煸四季豆 ($10.80)

I enjoyed the String Beans with Minced Pork & Dried Chilli dish. Flavourful and goes well with the rice.

Mouth Watering Chicken 口水鸡 ($9.80)

We only ordered pork belly skewers towards the end of the meal to have a try. Wow, actually we should have ordered more skewers! Pork belly was sooooo goood! Fatty, yes. But soooooo goood! Now give me a Tsingtao.

Pork Belly 秘制五花肉 ($2 per stick)

Let's do a buffet next time, and try more of the chicken pots and skewers! And, let's order some beer too!

Lovely times with Gilbert, Ziqing, Darren and Jeff.

Café Kitsuné @ Capitol

Yen chose the place for tea after our lunch at Suntec. This place is nearer to Wu Pao Chun side. Was there around 4pm and we waited for a table.

shopfront

Staff was nice to pass us the menu and to talk to us a bit about the menu. The available bakes are visibly displayed, so one could just go over to that counter to see what's available for the day.

drinks menu

After half an hour, we were presented with a choice on whether we would like to continue waiting for a slightly larger table or all 5 of us squeezed to the smaller table. We didn't mind the smaller table plus I got tired of waiting. Hahaa!

table decor

Iced Houjicha Latte @$8.50

It was a warm day, so I opted for Iced Houjicha Latte. Pretty mild but it's likeable. The hot drinks looked pretty good with the latte art.

Latte @$7.00

Sesame Latte @$7.50

Tried a sip of the sesame latte and it tasted just like the sesame paste dessert albeit not so thick. Lovely flavour if you like sesame.

We got  a couple of the dessert, so our table was pretty busy with all the small plates.

Strawberry Shortcake @$13

I liked the cake. Tasted as how a strawberry shortcake would be.

cross section view

Think Wendy chose the Yuzu Pistachio. Hmmm, it was tiny. It tasted sweet, slightly tart and tangy.

Yuzu Pistachio Strawberry Tart @$13

inner view

Actually, Yen just wanted the shortbread. Because of its shape. Cute fox shape. We got 2 out of 4 flavours. Had the plain and the choco ones.

Kitsune Shortbread @$4 (one piece)

photogenic

Also tried the Paris-Brest. Paris-Brest by far, is a good choice. Well, my sampling size was rather small. In reality, am only eating this like once in every few years? Ginett version was giant-sized in comparison.

Paris-Brest @$12

The cream was delicious, although one of friend would disagree. But this dessert is my kind of thing. And the shortcake.

Overall, the place seemed popular. There was a small line outside when we were there.

Abundance @ Redhill

Dropped by after work and waited for about 15 to 20 minutes for a table because we just wanted to try our luck as walk-ins.

The place is rather small and was bustling on a Thursday evening. Saw a few customers who did take-away. Probably they stay nearby.

menu

Selected cocktails were going for $24 for 2. So, I wanted the one with sour plum. Eric got himself the chrysanthemum flavored cocktail. Liang teh.

Sour plum highball and chrysanthemum gin cocktails @$24 (for 2, Happy Hour)

I liked mine. I'd probably can do two of these.

For mains, we shared the beef noodles, prawn paste chicken cutlet fried rice and prawn toast. Yep, we didn't do their gua baos. Oops.

Beef Noodles Soup 红烧牛肉面@$16.90

chunky tender meat

The broth was quite beefy. Tasty and comforting. Not spicy. Loved the chunky meat that's tender but not overly soft. Just wished that it had more fats but great for lean meat lovers. Noodles were chewy and enjoyable.

Prawn Paste Chicken Fried Rice 虾酱鸡炒饭@$11.90

The visuals of the prawn paste chicken fried rice was on-point but am not quite sure about the flavours of the prawn paste though. A tad different from what I am usually accustomed to. Generous portions of cutlet, so kudos on that. Fried rice, was a tad on the healthier tasting.

Prawn Toast 面包虾仁@$6 (4 pieces)

Prawn toast was a delicious snack (where one eats it for fun). It's more of a pasty texture.

thin toast, prawn cake-like

If you're looking to visit during dinner time, then reservation is highly recommended.

Lee Lai Jiak 李来甲 @ Tiong Bahru Plaza

Chanced upon this place as we were wandering around Tiong Bahru Plaza for a place to have our dinner. It's been so long since I came back to this mall. Has it been over 10 years? I guessed so.

shop sign

The place looked spacious and bright, so decided to park our butts there and to enjoy milk tea with our food. The physical menu is at the counter, or one could just scan the QR code at each of the table to peruse what to eat and to order as well. Payment at the counter after your meal. Send the order for food and drinks via the application and staff will bring it to your table once it is ready.

food menu

Scan first, eat later

Our food arrive pretty quickly. Especially the braised minced pork rice (卤肉饭). Super fast, within 5 minutes after we ordered.

Braised Minced Pork Rice @$8.80

Pig Intestine Mee Sua @$9.80

I'd recommend the lu rou fan (braised minced pork rice) instead of the pig intestine mee sua although I loved the intestines. The rice dish looked better and tasted better. Plus, it is more filling than the mee sua which was a tad too much liquid ratio when compared to the mee sua.

Flavour wise, both are nice. Loved the pickles in the rice.

Salt and Pepper Chicken @$9.80

I felt that the salt and pepper chicken was too little, for the price paid. It was quite funny to see this plate with a smattering of small pieces of chicken whereas the staff brought out a plate of gorgeous large piece of golden fried cutlet to the table next to us. Am guessing that must be the Golden Kala Chicken Thigh or Chicken Chop? No idea.

To be fair, the salt and pepper chicken was tasty. Good as a beer snack.

Milk Tea @$4.80

I liked the milk tea. Mild and not too sweet yet, it has that distinct tea fragrance. Tried their Wintermelon Milk Tea too. It was much sweeter than the milk tea. Otherwise, nice flavour and made me think of Fengjia Night Market

Staff are nice.
