Experiencing Sofitel Singapore City Center @ Wallich Street

Was there in Apr 2022 together with the staycay gang; Tracy, Hence and Ivan. Tried to do an early check-in about 1.30pm but one of our room is not ready yet.

level 1

Hence, we proceeded to lunch at Itaewon Jjajang while we wait. After lunch, we went back to the hotel and the rooms are ready by now.

Oh, there was no bedroom slippers when I searched for it in the room. Hence, called receptionist and they sent Housekeeping to pass one slipper.

One thing that I was puzzled is that there was a box for toiletries in the bathroom but it was empty. The bathing gel, shampoo and conditioner were all placed in the bathroom but it wasn't sealed. Hence, not sure whether it is new or used...

The next morning, when Housekeeping came by to refresh the room, there was another set of bathing gel, shampoo and conditioner and these too do not have a sticker seal so I guess, not a concern here?

Let's go for evening cocktail at Club Millesime. We were at the Lounge a tad earlier than 6pm, and the staff kindly served us nuts and juices while we wait for the start of the evening cocktail.

I like the sweets from Sofitel. The macaron was lovely! The hot food selection was limited to just two items.

Breakfast is served at Racines and they have adequate selections. Guest will tick-off the orders from an order chit.

Breakfast was filling and food was tasty. The omelette plate had all the western elements plus one small side of stir fried mushrooms for the Eastern element. Interesting.

I had a good sleep at Sofitel City Center as its room condition was cozy and comfortable.

Syohachi Yakiniku 尚八日式燒肉店 @ Wallich Street

It's been ages since we last ate yakiniku. Was it in Taiwan the other time? So when Tracy and Hence suggested, both Ivan and myself, readily agreed. Plus, Syohachi Yakiniku is very near our hotel.

the shop

We chose the 'Early Bird' ala-carte buffet which included beef, at $50++ per pax. This set came with one-time serving of sashimi, which works well for us because we crave for sashimi too!

one-time serving of sashimi

The sashimi platter comprised of salmon, tuna and scallops. I liked the scallop best!

Then, by default, the staff will bring out one serving of mixed meat for the table while we peruse the menu. For drinks, we took the default green-tea (option of hot or cold) as it is refillable.

default platter

The default platter seemed like a sampler plate where one gets different cuts of beef, chicken, pork belly, prawns, squid and oysters. Try first before ordering from the menu, I suppose.

Can't go wrong with prime cuts and shortplates, so beef was quite a 'safe' choice. I liked the chicken but it was a tad too salty. Pork belly was tough though, so we decided not to order it for the buffet. The oysters that came in the aluminum foil cup, was super tiny. Decided to skip this one as well.

cheers

let's get cooking

prime ribs

The leaner cuts of the beef was rather chewy, so I preferred the prime cuts where the marbling was good resulting in tender meat.

The lamb chop was of a good sized before cooking and texture was tender good. However, it was also strongly marinated. Need to wash it down with the green tea.

The seafood section was also worth ordering, especially the scallops. Large and plump. Lovely!

The staff here are friendly and pretty efficient in topping up our green tea. The orders were served rather quickly too although the shop was bustling. Kudos to the lovely staff!

I got to enjoy the yakiniku because Hence was busy grilling for us. Thank you buddy!

Not forgetting the salads and side dishes, these were good complements to the meat.

refreshing side dishes

I did spy on other tables and mostly were in groups of 4 or more. But there was also a table with just one pax. So, as long as you enjoy the food, solo dining is fine as well!

Thank you Tracy, Hence and Ivan for sharing the calories! I think we ate 1kg for one pax during our 90 minutes of dining...

Kimildo 김일도 Premium Korean BBQ @ 100 Tras Street

Suggested this place to the gang when we were doing our Amara staycay and Kimildo is literally a few steps away from Amara Hotel. Reservation was made via Quandoo and the restaurant staff will call you a few hours before the appointed time to confirm the reservation.

Do note that there is a 90-minutes dining limit per table.

The menu is really simple and us being a group of 4 pax, decided to go for the Pork Platter (@$66) and the Special Beef Platter (@$88).

tips on eating pork, the delicious way

Also note that lettuce is ordered separately as ala-carte item.

assorted pickes and dips

One of the set, also came with gyeran jjim (steamed egg), but I forgot which one. Could be the Pork Set if not wrong.

getting ready

while we wait

They will assign one staff to do the grilling for you at your table. We got a guy that grills in a super fast speed. Quite amazing as both our pork and beef platter were grilled in half hour including the change of grill plate. I have read Google reviews where diners had feedback that their meat was being moved around too much during the cooking, and yes, this was indeed true especially with the pork. I think he had to move the meat around very quickly because the charcoal heat was on permanent high.

We were served with the Special Beef Platter first. The staff did not introduce the meat cuts to us and would just go about BBQ'ing really quickly. We actually hijacked the platter for photo taking otherwise, straight onto the grill, it'd go.

yummy beef

The beef did not require any further sauces nor dip, and was good on its own or at most a slight dab of salt. Meat was tender and juicy.

Beef was devoured all too quickly and as fast as lightning, the staff changed the grill and started BBQ'ing the pork right away as soon as he has done BBQ'ing the beef. Such efficiency!

Pork Platter all in

The Pork Platter has belly, shoulder, skirt and a sausage. But we didn't have a chance to differentiate which is which because, after it was cooked, everything was just served together onto the metal plate. Of course, sausage was the easiest to differentiate. Hahah! Grilled cherry tomatoes was good.

TMI: One thing about the metal plate placed on the grill, it reminded me too much of a clinic/hospital.

Let's see a slow-motion short video:

fire-licked meats

Here's a short video of staff helping us to BBQ the meat:

pork collar

In general, the group prefers the beef over the pork. Both are likeable, but beef is more tender. I prefer the usual way of eating the pork wrap, which is with a dab of the samjang sauce, and garlic slices. The turmeric curry flavoured salt was interesting and reminds me of grilled lambs (cumin?) The special cocaine sauce was watery hence not sure what's the fuss about this. Was it addictive? Not really.

Even with 2 meat platters, we still went for supper after this meal. Completed our dinner ahead of the 90-minutes because to cook, it took only 30 minutes and another 30 minutes for us to finish up the meat.

Thank you Ivan, Hence and Tracy for being such good food buddies!
