Jeonpo Meat Shop 전포식육 - KBBQ Lunch @ 21 McCallum Street (The Clift)

It was a Saturday lunch meat up, and Tracy suggested "Jeonpo Meat Shop". Located at The Clift, just opposite of Amoy Street Food Center. Reservation was made two days prior.

Arrived earlier than reserved time, and was greeted promptly by staff upon entering the restaurant. However, we had some minor miscommunication and staff thought I was a walk-in customer although had informed them that we have a reservation. No worries, as that was sorted out within minutes.

I felt that the floor was a tad slippery on the day of visit (probably due to my shoe soles) and had to walk in slow-mo or step on those mat squares. Now that I am entering old age, need to be careful.

love the signage and posters

As usual, all the necessary utensils such as drinking cups, cutleries, water bottle are all located on your own table.

having sixth sense that the group will be ordering this

There is a QR code at the corner to the table to scan for menu. However, we discovered that some of the items in the hardcopy menu seemed to be missing from the app. Hence, we ended up placing the orders with the staff. Ordered Pork and Beef Set (@$140++) which comprises of pork jowl, pork belly and king-cut beef shortribs. Added additional portion (150gms) of pork jowl (@$31++). We'll also be having seafood pancake and japchae.

After which, tray of side dishes were served to the table. For a group of 5 pax, we got 2 trays.

side dishes and BBQ accompaniment

mixture of small cubes onions, garlic, radish and squid

blanched beansprouts

juicy kimchi

My favourites were the kimchi and the soy-pickled radish. The pickled green chili was spicy but shioks!

shredded cabbage with black sesame dressing

Staff will help to grill the meats, so one can just sit back and enjoy the end results.

Meat was firm with a good bite. Enjoy it with lettuce and there's coarse sea salt, ssamjang or garlic sauce.

Keke, we were having a debate on whether the garlic sauce had some kind of fruit in it (we were guessing like pear, mango or pineapple) only to have the staff coming back to inform, nope no fruit in there. Hahaha!

I had "Jeonpo Highball" to go along with the meal. It turned out to be a ginger-ale based highball.

Pork belly was quickly grilled up and it was gone as soon as it was served.

Personally, I felt that the japchae and seafood pancake portion were smaller than expected. Nevertheless, the japchae was loaded with meat and we enjoyed the well-fried flavours.

Seafood pancake had plenty of chives/spring onions and some small shrimps with bits of squid. The batter was soft in the insides.

Finale of the grilled meats was the King-cut Beef Shortribs.

It is hard to go wrong with beef shortribs. Loved that it was served chunky and that one bite was a good one. Flavourful on its own.

Thank you Ivan, Elle, Tracy and Hence for the meat up~

Daily Beer @ Telok Ayer

There were 3 things that stood out when I was perusing their online menu; fried chicken, craftbeer with localised names (hello Kampong Pilsner, Telok Hazy??) and of course, Ivan's favourite Fish Cake Soup.

It was an approximated 8 to 10 minutes walk from Telok Ayer MRT station (DT18) and one should head towards the temple/Telok Ayer Market/Hawker Center direction.

menu

No reservation is available, so our party arrived at 630pm on a weekday evening and only outdoor seats were available.

complimentary munchies

Order via the app and the food will arrive shortly after. Fried chicken took the longest to arrive but it was worth the wait. Let's see what else we tried for our party of 5.

Nacho Chips @$14

We took a bite of the nachos chips and we just looked at each other. Hmm, it tasted like a healthier choice version. There were obvious seasonings (cheese powder, seaweed bits and raisins) on the chips but those fell off as soon as the chips were picked up.

Grilled Dried Pollack @$28

The plate of grilled dried pollack looked impressive, I must say. Taste-wise, it was a close cousin of the nachos chips. Natural tasting and pretty much unsalted as well. Dunked it into its accompanying mayo sweet soy sauce and it was more enjoyable. The same mayo dip worked well with the nachos too!

Beer Flight @$35

Ok, the beer flight was placed in such a way that I can't see what is what. One can't pick the sampler flavours, so that night we were served K-Ginseng Lager, Seoul Weizen, Telok Pale Ale, Telok IPA and K-Festbier.

As per its name, the K-Ginseng Lager tasted of ginseng but it was still light and hoppy. Perfect for our hot humid weather. Bitterness level of slightly less than 1 out of 5. Seoul Weizen was smooth and bready, with a hint of bitterness that's slightly stronger than the lager. The Telok Pale Ale and IPA both have pronounced fruity fragrance that's accompanied by prominent bitter after taste that's between level 2 and 3. Lastly, the Festbier was the most different from the lot with its rounded sweet caramel malty flavours. I had flashback of chicken essence from this drink. Hahaha!

If you have at least 3 drinkers in the group, I do think the beer flight is a good way to taste multiple flavours at one go since it was served in a 200ml glass. The flavour that I really wanted to try on next visit, is the Busan Hazelnut Porter.

Premium Fish Cake Soup @$28

We were glad that we ordered the fish cake soup. Lovely soup that warms the tummy. Classic tasting and there were chicken cutlet, eomuk (fishcake), and hard boiled egg in there. Enjoyable after a couple of beers.

Angry Bird (Original - whole chicken 8 pieces) @$30.90

Since it was our first visit, let's get their original version to try. Surprisingly, this already came with some heat (spicy). Nicely seasoned and freshly fried. Outside crunchy and inside was juicy even for breast meat. I had the wings and the ribs, and was satisfied with this order. Will visit again for fried chicken and craft beer.

Thank you to my food and travel buddies; Tracy, Hence, Ivan and Shermaine for the meet-up and the dinner treat!

O.BBa Jjajang & BBQ @ Chun Tin Road

Finally, tried O.BBa KBBQ at their Chun Tin Road outlet (Bukit Timah). It's within 5 minutes walking distance from Beauty World MRT, so that's pretty convenient. Reservation is not available at this outlet, hence diners would have to appear at their doorstep, then key in your phone number at the queue kiosk (at the entrance) and wait for staff to call. One could also check queue status via whatsapp.

My bro and me went at about 1pm and were seated within 10 minutes. The shop was fairly busy even at late lunch hour.

Scan the QR code left by the staff at the table and order through that as well. The place has adequate staff, so no issue in getting your questions answered. Drinks were served immediately once order is placed and the BBQ set appeared within 5 minutes as well.

Set C - mix of beef and pork @$96++

Beef short rib, pork belly, traditionally marinated beef, marinated pork rib, sausage

At first, I was slightly confused as to whether the staff will do the BBQ or are we supposed to do it ourselves as the staff was just standing at our table after bringing out the meats. Ahh, perhaps he was waiting for me to finish taking the photos? Hahaha!

let's start

apple salad

fishcake

sliced sausages in tomato sauce

kimchi

While staff was busy grilling the meats, we busied ourselves with the side dishes. I liked the cold apple salad and the kimchi the most.

beef short ribs

We loved the tender slices of short ribs. It's unmarinated hence, one could add dip it into the sesame oil salt mix, or make it into a wrap with whichever condiments that you like. Noticed that the shop don't provide raw garlic here.

grilled cheese

Realised that the set also came with 2 squares of cheese which is also grilled. Interesting, and staff shared with us that this type of mozzarella cheese isn't too melty and hence, suitable for the grill. My first time trying a grilled cheese that isn't haloumi.

I was confused x2, when the staff suddenly dangled the already grilled cheese infront of me. So I quickly brought up my small plate to receive but he frowned. I was like thinking... what, what do you want me to do? Then he said "photo". Orhhhhh, he wanted me to take a photo of the grilled cheese.

For drinks, we tried the Chungha Sparkling which is like soju in sparkling form. A ladies drink, and it was sweet.

gyeran jjim (with the set)

Staff kindly advised us to eat the steamed egg otherwise, the hotstone pot will continue to cook it due to its retained heat and the parts that are in contact with the pot surface, will likely get burnt.

This oppa staff at our table, do like to nag us a bit. Hahaha!

tasty

pork ribs

grill all

traditionally marinated beef

I least liked the traditional marinated beef as it was mostly lean and became such small bits after cooking. The marinade was sweet and similar to teriyaki or bulgogi sauce.

Give me all the fattier cuts, anytime!

The set also came with selected stew or noodles. We chose jjajangmyeon because wanted to try their shop specialty.

jjajangmyeon (with the set)

mix well and slurp

The noodles portion could be main dish for 2 pax. We were so full after all the food. I think this set feeds 3 comfortably.

juicy pork ribs

grilled white kimchi, onions, sausage, beef tendons (cut out from the beef shortribs earlier)

The free sausage was pretty good. I think it is pork sausage and texture was bouncier than the banchan version.

Once you're done with the food, head on to the cashier to make payment. Our meal costs $133 in total for 2 pax.

On your way out, remember to take your complimentary small haagen daaz ice-cream to eat outside as staff said they are sorry, but the ice cream can't be eaten inside the shop. I guess this way is to free up the dining table for the next seating.

ice-cream choco flavour

Overall, staff are friendly and efficient. Thank you to the oppa who helped us BBQ that afternoon.
