Food Delivered from Yishun Park Hawker Center

Ordered food via Makanguru with "HH56" promo code. Minimum order is $40 otherwise, there will be a small order fee surcharge. Delivery fee is $8, and with the promo code, there will be an offset of $5.60. This is a not a sponsored post, but rather sharing of experience. To tell you the truth, I have not been to Yishun Park Hawker Center. None at all, since its inception. Hence, it makes sense to have food delivered from there if I wanted to try any. A thing to note about Makanguru deliveries, is that if you specified a timing between 6 pm to 7pm, the food will likely reach by 6.15pm. So far, that's my experience with them.

Lor Mee @ $ 7.50

The menu seemed to be just the typical zichar fried noodles. Chose one that is more interesting, which is lor mee. I have not tried any zichar lor mee and this was the first. There was only 1 size and priced at $7.50 per serving. No photos on the delivery menu, so I was anticipating if it'd be looking somewhat like the Malaysian style of zichar lor mee. Alas, it was not.

The thick yellow noodles used seemed to be similar to the one in hokkien mee. There wasn't any wok-hei in this dish but that's ok. The ingredients seemed aplenty and liked that the portion is generous enough to feed 1.5 pax. There's a couple of prawns, fish cake slices, pork slices and yam. Initially, I thought got sio bak, but that turned out to be yam. Keke. With yam and noodles, enough to fill-up one's tummy.

two servings for me

Danggui Duck @$15 (half)

The roast pork was of the wet market kind, and its skin wasn't crispy by the time it got delivered. The porky smell was a slightly stronger too. Nevertheless, the meat itself was moist and made a good accompaniment to the noodles. I had these with a Syrah.

The duck smelled nice but not too strong with the herbal stuffs. Keeping these for instant noodles in a day or two.

beansprouts with cockles @$6

tiny tiny

Hmm, gotta have my vegetables and hence, ordered this stir-fried beansprouts with cockles. Ok lah, actually wanted to eat cockles. Liked that there's lardo but these were not exactly crisp by the time it got to my place. The beansprouts were still crunchy and that's lovely. But the cockles were almost non-existent due to its scarcity and its tiny size.

I was that close of ordering white carrot cake but luckily, I chose oyster omelette in the end. The version here is plentyful of eggy goodness and the surprise factor? There's sweet cai poh inside as well! Yay! I chuckled at the presentation, where there's a lone oyster ontop of the fried egg. Don't tell me there's nothing inside..*gasps*

Oyster omelette @$6

plump oyster

Was somewhat relieved to find that there's plenty of plump oysters hidden insde the omelette. I took one third portion of it, and in there was about 3 good sized oysters. I liked the eggs. So yummy.

egg~

Super full after eating the noodles, beansprouts and the oyster omelette. $10 per pax for today's meal.

Makan-Makan @ Pasir Panjang Food Centre - In search of BBQ Chicken Wings and Ended Up with More!

Was in the mood for some BBQ chicken wings, and we were nearby Pasir Panjang Food Centre so off we went in search for some smokey tasty meat.

There are more than one stalls that offers BBQ chicken wings and with similar pricing, so we decided we'd try 216 Choa Chu Kang BBQ Chicken Wing since the person who stays in CCK, have not tried any CCK BBQ wings. That would be me, by the way. Hahaha!

chicken wings @$9.80 (7 pieces)

The wings did not look like much but it had good flavours. Smokey, well marinated and goes well with that plate of watery tangy chili sauce. Was kind of worried the light plate might flip anytime if a strong enough gust of wind would come our way!

Next up, satay. I mean, who can resist this bite-sized flavourful meat skewers. Maybe vegetarian, but I digressed. Again, there are plenty of satay stalls in this food centre but we zoomed right in to the popular one, which is Yusoff Haji Jalal Satay.

Yusoff Haji Jalal Satay - chicken, beef and mutton (min. order of 10 sticks)

First noticeable thing about Yusoff Haji Jalal Satay was how deeply coloured the satay is. I would imagine that was because all the seasoning and marinade had seeped deep into the meat. The sauce was also thick and looked so inviting. The satay may look tough but it wasn't. Instead the tongue was greeted with a sweetish-savoury marinade with meat that was nicely firm and chewy.

Edges of the meat was also nicely charred but of course, nowadays we shouldn't eat too much of those charred parts. But that's where the essence of the smokey flavours congregates!

Yusoff Haji Jalal Satay

We had placed an order for BBQ stingray from Xin Fu Ji (新福记) but that'll take about 45 minutes to cook. Saw there's one stall (Li Yuan) next to the BBQ seafood stall that sells oyster omelette so we ordered one to munch on while waiting for the stingray.

Li Yuan fried oyster  蠔煎 @$8 (medium)

This stall will hand you a buzzer so that you can be notified when the food is ready. The other stalls seemed to be able to deliver to your table though. The oyster were large but I didn't like the flour in this version. The inclusion of lots of herbs and spring onions were good. Otherwise, its flavours were rather muted.

huge oyster

Actually, there is also a satay stall at where we were sitting and it sells pork satay. Hence, we ordered some to try. By 'some', it meant another 10 sticks! Wow, at this moment, I then realised that we had overdone ourselves and ordered too much.

Hmm, this stall #3 doesn't seem to have a name though I can see words like "Famous Satay" on its lighted boards. It sells BBQ chicken wings, and satay (chicken, pork, mutton). However, the pork satay was too lean for me. It will be good if it could have just 5% more of fats.

Famous Satay - pork satay @70 cents per stick (min. 10 sticks)
Finally, the BBQ stingray reaches our table. The lady was quite apologetic about it. The first-time experience in ordering was also quite awkward. The Xin Fu Ji stall only had this lady to take orders and there is a man inside the very very tiny kitchen to cook all the orders. The lady would be busy bustling around taking the seafood from the ice-box and prepping them on a plate for the man inside. While she was doing all these, the customer would just have to stand around and wait till she is ready to glance at you.

新福记 BBQ stingray @$15 (medium)

The order arrived with side plates and a complimentary tissue pack. I found that a rather nice gesture for a hawker centre setup. Was the wait worth it? At $15 per medium sized stingray, there was an abundance of meat. Flesh was tender though it was lacking in the char department. The sauce was also rather subtle. Leaning more like an assam sauce where it is more tangy than spicy. In fact, the spice level was rather mild. Loved the chenchaluk onion sauce that came with this. This stall was mentioned in Michelin Guide 2017.

All in all, it was a hawker food feast on a weekday evening. We ordered too much and ate a tad more than we should. However, we enjoyed it!

Journey to the West for Good Food @ 155 Bukit Batok Street 11

Our 西游记 to suss out good food. Many prolific bloggers had been reviewing the west side story, so it is now our turn to just makan! First destination was to 233 Bukit Batok East Avenue 5 and we had enjoyed good plates of chicken feet, 牛腩面 beef brisket and also Cantonese porridge (粥). Full? Nah, that's just starters. Now let's go for Part 2, we'd say.

Hence, Ivan, Kris, Jennifer, Tiara and myself managed to land ourselves in 155 Bukit Batok Street 11. Each of us went and ordered for the group. It was pretty amazing how we didn't end up with the same foods! (but that's because we comms'ed each other prior, keke)

Fatty Weng 肥仔荣食摊

We felt like having meat that day. Lots of it. So Ivan went to get these substantial looking meat platters. A quarter roasted duck and double-meat of roasted pork and char siew. These slices of meat fed the 6 of us very well.

Fatty Weng's roasted meats

The roasted duck looked nondescript but it was good. Each bite was tender and flavourful. Some of its skin parts came with a layer of fats. Would it be jelak? I'd thought but still, it went into the mouth. Wow. That feeling where the oil oozes out and just gently greases the tasty meat with added texture was simply amazing. Definitely impressed.

Roast Duck 烧鸭 @$15

Actually, the first bite went to the siu yuk 烧肉 (roast pork) to test the crackling. Still crispy even after 15 minutes. I can say that I've been eaten roasted pork since I was a kid. Maybe since I was a 3-year old? Chunky bites always worked for me. Unfortunately, the char siew was too lean for most of us. It gives a good workout for the jaw.

Ah Lipp Famous Penang Prawn Noodles 槟城虾面

For first timers, we tried the big prawns noodles. The soup looked potent with its dark red hues. Sip it while it is hot and one would have been transported into umami-land. Such bliss! All the goodness of seafood is in that bowl of soup. For photography purpose, we got the dry-version. Personally, I'd much prefer a soupy version of Penang prawn noodles, anytime.

大虾面 Big Prawn Noodles (Dry) @$10

The prawns were huge, and firm to bite. Very 扎实 (solid). My favourite combo for prawn noodles would be pork ribs and regular sized prawns. But, the soup must be good. If the soup is no good, then it is a no go for me, regardless of what ingredient the noodles came with.

Another taste test for Penang fare, would be its assam laksa. I still remembered my first time when I had a taste of it. Probably around age 6 or 7? I thought it was horrible. But as they say, our taste buds change over time and I learnt to appreciate it better.

Ah Lipp Assam Laksa @$4

The chunky white rice noodles seemed right, the ingredients abit too well laid for a hawker fare but on first sip, I was disappointed. The soup was too light. There's plenty of fish in the bowl though, and that was a plus point. Since the broth makes or breaks a dish, my preference went to the prawn noodles.

Fried Baby Squid Prawn Mee

Fried Baby Squid Prawn Mee (minus baby squids because they ran out of it!)

This is one very popular stall. Plenty of customers and people kept coming up to order. But they worked fast. The zhao pai 招牌 seemed to be the baby squid prawn noodles but ran out of baby squids by the time we ordered. So one regular plate of hokkien mee would have to do.

The noodles were moist and plenty of sliced pork, some seafood and topped with pork lard, and a dash of sambal on the side. For any good plate of hokkien mee, pork is one of the important ingredients besides the broth. I think the meat gave the dish some depth in flavours. Yummy and recommended!

It was a fun day, exploring our hawker centres/coffeeshops with this group of foodies. Thank you Jen, Kris, Tiara, Shermaine, Hence and Ivan for a full-filling day. 你吃饱了吗?

camera eating already!

New Lane Hawker Centre @ Lorong Baru, Georgetown Penang

This hawker centre is located like a minute's walk to Sunway Hotel in Georgetown. Was staying at Glow Macalister Road, and to get to New Lane from Glow, is approximately ten minutes walk along the same side of the hotel. Yay to no road crossing!

New Lane, stalls getting ready

New Lane Hawker Centre or rather hawker street is actually a collection of smaller stalls selling various street food that converges daily after 3+pm. Numerous stalls would lining up along the road and some would be ready for business at about 4+. By 6pm, this place would come alive with wok sizzling, customers placing orders, chefs busy dishing up their wares and vehicles trying to squeeze in and out of this small lane.

New Lane Hawker Street

Over a span of 2 nights, I've managed to try a few stalls from this makan area. Street food hunt.

seafood char koay kak

For the uninitiated, seafood char koay kak's taste is akin to char kway teow plus fried carrot cake. Instead of radish, koay kak is normally rice flour. Lots of chai po and garlic was fried and thus, it was very fragrant. This stall was rather generous with the amount of dough too.

char koay kak takeaway @RM$5
it should be renamed as prawn char koay kak instead

Still preferred fried carrot cake's taste though. Not used to the rice flour cake's taste here, though the rest of the ingredients were actually very fragrant. Prawns were unfortunately overfried too.

There are stalls located within the coffeeshop too. Tried the roasted chicken wing that many has blogged about. Minimum order is 2 pieces and each piece goes for RM$2.20. Drumstick (more apt to call it chicken thigh) is RM$6 per piece.

roasted chicken wings & drumsticks
roasted wings - takeaway

Liked the wings here better than the one I tried at a coffeeshop in Gurney Drive, near Evergreen Laurel Hotel. The chili sauce here was green in colour and the wings were glazed with sweet sauce. Drumstick looked good too.

Outside the same coffeeshop, there is a stall selling congee. To be precise, it sells 猪肠粥 or chee cheong jook (in cantonese) or pig intestine congee. Hmm, but its chinese sign says it sells pig mixed parts congee. Also can lah... Not sure if the boss had retired or not but the stall was manned by two foreign workers.

pig intestine congee stall

Had the congee inside the coffeeshop. For this privilege, one need to order at least 1 drink from the coffeeshop.

chee cheong chook - RM6.50

It was one, glorious bowl of congee. Liked it very much. Loaded with ingredients - stomach, shang cheong (生肠), meat, deep fried intestine, liver and char siew. I think it'll taste much better without the sweet char siew. Less sweet and more savoury would be good. Congee was smooth, just how a good Cantonese porridge texture should be. Recommended. Just tell the guy you want everything inclusive of the deep fried intestine. Yummeh!

Along New Lane, one will find a loh bak stall. Not the ones within the coffeeshop but the one outside.

loh bak 卤肉
closer view

Penang Loh Bak is actually a myriad of deep fried items, usually fried upon order. For first timer who can't decide, just let the stall owner know that it's for one pax and she'll pick something for you. Tried this twice and the common items that she puts in there were loh bak (meat roll), prawn fritters, fish ball and tofu. Felt that it was value for money as the pack had 5 items for RM$5. Liked the sauces too. The gooey brown sauce and the sweet chili sauce with peanuts. Dipped into both for maximum taste! Liked this loh bak so much I had it twice during my 2 nights stay at Glow Hotel Macalister Road.
