Kiyoshi Restaurant @ 75 Amoy Street (Available for Takeaway/Delivery)

Kiyoshi きよし Restaurant is a Japanese izakaya (居酒屋) that now offers takeaway/online delivery services.

Recently tried their reasonably priced bento set and a few side dishes. Sushi Moriawase had 5 pieces of sushi (tamago, ebi, hotate, unagi and sake), 3 pieces of maki, 3 slices of salmon and blanched spinach with mushrooms and cherry tomatoes. Loved the gari (pickled ginger) and the pickled radish in the bento set. Plenty of wasabi, but they forgot the shoyu!

my favourite was the scallop sushi!
wished it was thicker!
love the crunch from the ikura

Let's try some side dishes besides sushi! A must order in any Japanese restaurant, is the tamago yaki. Best eaten when freshly cooked. But often times, most restaurants serve it cold.

Tamago Yaki @$4.80

The tamago felt more like a dessert as it was leaning on the sweeter side. Still enjoyable nonetheless. The tebasaki chicken wings were skinny. Marinade was flavourful and had a hint of alcohol. Unfortunately, it arrived cold and hard. I guessed that I should probably heat this up before eating but I was hungry!

Thank you Jennifer for arranging the sampler set and Kiyoshi for the meal.

[Taipei] 独立牛肉面 Du Li Beef

In 2019, I was determined to try at least one meal of beef noodles, which Taipei is famed for. Wanted somewhere that's not too far off from the hotel, and I was staying at 璞漣商旅西門館 Hotel Puri Ximen Branch. According to Google Map, it takes only about 7 minutes from the hotel to the beef noodles shop. Great! If Google estimated 7 minutes, that's probably 15 minutes for me. My sense of direction is not that great... hahahaa, but eventually found it. Across the street, there was a dumpling shop and I was tempted...

shop front

But I didn't waiver because beef noodles was what I came for, and I shall be eating that!

The interior of the shop feels like a cafe. Mostly young adults were seen in there. Was greeted by the staff once the sliding door is opened. Awkward as that will also cause the patrons in the shop to look at who's walking-in. Lone diner will be directed to the window seats.

nice sunny day

The shop is manned by just the staff and the Chef in the kitchen. Pretty efficient. I liked the shop decor. Cosy and plenty of natural light.

write down your order

The place is semi self-service, and one orders by ticking the desired items in the order chit. It's in Mandarin though. Heng, I can agak-agak (guess) a bit.

Once you have decided and indicated on the paper, pass it to the staff. She was kind of taken aback when I asked if I need to pay first when submitting the order. Hahaa! She patiently informed that customers will pay after they're done with the meal. Oh, and I was happy that she asked how I'd like the tendon to be, as she mentioned that most customers liked it chewy. For me, I wanted mine to be soft.

As it was past typical meal time, Chef started to prepare my bowl almost immediately. The staff will bring the noodles to your table. For utensils, napkin and chili oil, one can take from the common area.

yellow noodles

Soup was lightly beefy and fragrant with herbs. Not too overpowering, clean tasting and served piping hot. Noodles were smooth and easily slurped. There were plenty of beef pieces in there and I was a tad worried if it would be tough. I was all smiles at first bite. Wow. Beef was well cooked and fork tender.

so yummy

Tendon was soft and gelatinous. So goood! Overall, happy with the place, the food and the service. It was a good choice!

hi there

One could have a meal here at a relaxed place as there are no long lines outside, pressurizing you to eat quickly. Although, the boy who sat next to me managed to finish his up-sized noodle bowl within 30 minutes. Can see that he too, was satisfied with his meal.

Once done eating, diners usually would collect their empty bowl, used utensils and return it to the staff.

Spent NT$190 (~ SGD9) for the beef noodles.

I must say, the gift box for the rice dumplings was rather nice. Elegant and stylish in lovely green. Quite sturdy too!

Here's a short 'unboxing' video:

Lovely to see a short message from team Grand Shanghai. Happy 端午节 to you too!

nicely sealed

Am impressed that each of the rice dumplings were individually packed and nicely sealed. Didn't eat it immediately, and had it a few days later. Simply steamed for a few minutes will do.

classic signature flavour

Below are the available flavours from Grand Shanghai Restaurant:

  1. Grand Shanghai Rice Dumpling (⼤上海特⾊裹蒸粽)
  2. Shanghainese Braised Pork Belly (东坡⾁咸蛋莲⼦粽)
  3. Brown Glutinous Rice Dumpling (五⾹糙⽶蛋⻩咸⾁粽)
  4. Shanghainese Sweetened Eight Treasure Rice Dumpling (上海⼋宝⾖沙粽)

The Grand Shanghai Rice Dumpling is the largest, almost squarish in shaped and filled with conpoy, homecured salted pork, chicken, chinese mushroom, egg yolk, lotus seed and green bean. Retails at $28.80++ each.

The rest of the flavours are priced at $9.80++ each. Let's try one, shall we? Truth be told, I've never tried a Shanghainese rice dumpling, myself. This was the first!

hello, good looking~

Chose the Brown Glutinous Rice Dumpling to taste. Again, my first time having a brown glutinous rice dumpling! So many firsts in this tasting!

Brown Glutinous Rice Dumpling  五⾹糙⽶蛋⻩咸⾁粽 @$9.80++ each

The rice was soft and if you eat the rice alone, it actually tasted mildly sweet. There's adequate chunks of meat in there, and surprisingly, not too overly marinated.

marinated pork belly, chestnut x 2, salted egg yolk

As the ingredients may be hiding somewhere in a corner here and there, I liked to mix them around to balance out the flavours. Chestnuts were sweet. Pork belly was kind of a larger chunk that's fork tender. Loved that the fats are all intact. It was an awesome feeling for that sensation when you popped one into your mouth!

hitting the jackpot with salted egg yolk

Because it was thoroughly enjoyable, I had reached towards the end of the meal, with only these left....

which one would you savour last?

Loved that the promo menu consists of all-time favourite such as the Half Crispy Pork Knuckle! This had gotten me really excited as Starter + Pork Knuckle for just $25+ ? No way! But it really is true, so don't miss this!

Courtesy of Gilbert and friends at M Social Beast and Butterflies, I have had the good fortune to taste the new dishes in the menu. To start, we had the Nicoise Salad and Quinoa Tabbouleh.  I really had no clue to what's a Tabbouleh except that it sounded darn healthy! Actually, it is a healthier choice. Originated from the Middle East, it is a vegetarian salad.

Quinoa Tabbouleh تبولة‎ (UP $14+)

Am most surprised by the portion of this item. Indicated as a Starter, but boy... the portion is like a main course on its own. Wow!

The Quinoa Tabbouleh has a lovely balanced flavours and visually, it looked like a beautiful garden. It made me happy to be eating something as colourful as this!

If you're afraid that quinoa might be a tad too filling, then Nicoise Salad would be a lighter healthy starter. There's mesclun, french beans, quail eggs, tuna chunks, cherry tomatoes, white anchovies and idaho potatoes with basil oil dressing.

Nicoise Salad (UP $16+)

As for the mains, we got to try the Parma Ham and Burrata Cheese Tartine, and Kurobuta Claypot Rice.

Get ready with a glass of wine, and sink your teeth into the fully loaded Parma Ham & Burrata Cheese Tartine. Chew and savour the flavours. Perfect with a sip of crisp white wine and a little tête-à-tête.

come closer

You must be wondering, what is this Kurobuta Claypot Rice? Let me show you...

Kurobuta Claypot Rice (UP $18+)

It looked like an indulgent version of "lu rou fan" (卤肉饭). The container was pretty deep, and the amount of rice would be enough to feed more than 1 pax. There were condiments provided, in case one would like to break the richness of the dish.

luscious runny yolk

Gave it a good stir and mixed it well. The braised sauce was superb and wished there were more. The rice towards the bottom were missing out on the sauce! Will recommend to heat up this dish before digging in. If you are expecting wok-hei from this dish, don't. I know I did as the "Claypot" in its name gave that sort of expectation. Nevertheless, it was a hearty and enjoyable rice dish!
